At the Mercy of Feelings: A Poem

Val is a life-long practically oriented student of effective emotional and attitudinal responses to the many challenges of life.

What is that deciding how we feel

without asking for conscious approval

and how is that supposed to be a fair deal

with this clear evidence of our free will removal.

Being spontaneous we are stuck at a receiving end

at mercy of imposing and unwelcome sensations

with those happy moments being a godsend

spared for some really special occasions.

And if not spontaneous, do we opt for phony

by refusing to surrender to that internal flow

so is it merely a bunch of New Age baloney

to guide our emotions as best as we know?

We are whatever we let our emotions to make us

but it doesn't happen if we choose their course

with no chance that they could ever break us

if we merely override their imposing force.

Life is all about feelings when we boil it down

for them we crave and for them we breathe

so why not stop playing a helpless clown

for slaving to emotions is just a myth.

Michael---You are right, my friend, as valuable as they are to us, emotions shouldn't override our reasoning.

      Some opinions matter

If we know our own feelings (I do) we know feelings are not reliable, isn't worth to depend on them, "liberal- minded" as we are, we are competent to achieve what we please.
