I Am Sorry Black Woman
Samuel Malik Canty: the Word Bird. I am the author of Five Poetry Books, I understand my Purpose, and my words are my proof...
I am sorry Black Woman for not being your king in times of need…
Sorry for running away from my responsibilities when you needed me most…
I know, I have taken flight, instead of standing and fighting for the preservation of my family…
This society has always treated me like damaged goods, I didn’t need you to see or treat me that way too…
I am sorry Black Woman for the countless tears I heaped upon you…
I am sorry Black Woman for the cheating and mistreatments and the non-Communications of my fears…
I know that you have carried the burden, on your firm, yet gentle shoulders, of raising our children by yourself with very little help from me…
I am sorry for being afraid of commitment…
I am sorry for making myself believe that you can fulfill all my needs, when even I can’t…
I am sorry, so I apologize to you for not being able to handle the residue of slavery, the 3/5 amendments, the stripping of my soul, by those who still seek to break me…
I apologize for not trusting anyone, not confiding in anyone, not truly loving anyone including myself…
I am sorry that somewhere along the lines I forgot to treasure you…
You have always been a rock, no matter how much others have tried to wear you out or tear you down…
I am sorry that the only legacy I left behind in our relationship was tears…
I am sorry it took me so long to realize that fighting with you is more productive than fighting against you…
Please accept this apology from a Black Man who has finally got in touch with his True Feeling and may this apology clear up a myth that Men don't care about Sh.....
