My Grandmother's Hope Chest

Since the moment I held a pencil I've been creating with drawings and words. I believe paintings enlighten and poems entice our audiences.

Grandparents

Do you ever wonder about life in a different time? Grandparents give us the opportunity to learn what life was like for them when they were young and growing up. What choices they had? What thoughts they thought?Their personal pearls of wisdom are valuable experiences they can share with us.

My Grandmother's Hope Chest

There it sits in astute grandness

Smug with handles of protection

A wooden box of content

Treasure troves of life’s passages

Items carefully selected

Items carefully placed

The creak and moans of wood explodes

My grandmother softly lifts the top

To discover her chest of hope

A name cleverly crafted

For women of her time

For women with one choice

Does the content have a seasoned order?

A mosaic rhythm of her life

Little buttons of filtered patterns

Crafted crochets of sequenced thoughts

A sea of fabric

A sea of wonder

Marriage with children

A husband to obey

Treasures to pass on

A box to preserve

A box to keep

Born to a life of service

A chromosome declared her place

A life predetermined

A life without question

Maybe in her crafted box

My grandmother kept a secret life

One that she could chose

Where no one kept a written log

A place to live in freedom

A place to live one’s dreams.
