Mayon Volcano: A tourist spot in the Philippines

A volcano is a rupture on the crust of a planetary mass object such as the Earth which allows lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface. Mayon Volcano is the Philippines’ most active volcano. The volcano is geographically shared by 8 municipalities and cities in Albay, which divides the cone like slices of pie when viewed from above.

There had been 49 eruptions of the volcano in the last 400 years. The most destructive eruption of Mayon Volcano was in 1814 which resulted to over 1,200 deaths. Following an eruption in November 2006, strong rains which accompanied typhoon Reming produced deadly lahars from ash and boulders. The mudslide buried much of the area surrounding the Volcano, including a great part of Legazpi City, killing about 1,266 people.

Despite being a natural hazard, the Mayon Volcano continues to be one of the tourism wonders of the Philippines. Its power and beauty has inspired many artists. Recently, the interest on the Mayon Volcano was given new life after the debut of the Mayon Volcano inspired gown of 2018 Ms. Universe Catriona Gray.

Apart from sight seeing, you can also ride an ATV and follow the lava trail of Mayon Volcano.I have trekked the lava trail many times and I am still awed by the beauty of Mayon Volcano!!!!

Yes it is. It erupted last year fortunately no casualties...But a lot went to Albay to witness the lava flow...

Mark Tulin from Santa Barbara, California on October 30, 2018:

Cool volcano. So true. Its silence is dynamic.
