A Short Laugh (a long grief)

Is there no right among us
Beyond the color of our skin?
Let me see your voice in the dark
Let me hear your eyes in the dim

There is no place to hide or learn
Where I stand, I can’t begin to preach
Far away or closely now
The way home is far beyond my reach

There is no war near my shore
Only broken hearts and fear
Should I dream if life is not struggle enough
Who can think that way if only comfort is near

I advanced beyond the morning dawn
The coffee in my veins is my only relief
Sleeping through the news is deaf and mute
Awakened life, a short laugh, a long grief
