Poetry, writing, and music are at the heart of Charmaine's loves. Not to forget swimming in the ocean, walking and wildlife.

Why This Poem?

After reading up about the metaphysical poets of the Renaissance period while listening to Cuban music in the background, I let my imagination roam to feel what it might be like if I was in a Cuban Bar one sultry summer’s night.

I adopted Shakespeare’s love sonnet style of 14 lines with 10 syllables per line. However, there are no rhyming couplets.

This is what came to me…..come and travel with me to a Bar in Cuba

A Poem: One Sultry Night….

one summer’s night in a Cuban Bar

smoke swirls and freezes the shadows

faces framed with wet wisps of hair

many low firelight silhouettes

two heaving bodies rising and falling

as they clank sideways seductively

the air is hot and swollen with tension

plumped lips pursed grasping for new air

he strums the side of his worn congas

the singer caresses the microphone

as her voice drones over the beat

hearts drop to the scuffed floor

being stomped on by stranger’s footprints

never to see in the same way again

we came in through the front door

not the back door with broken steps

my skin is white, now flushed pink

my teeth are white and aligned

worn lipstick is a wet poppy red

university is my heritage

here lies my friends and network

I am allowed to enjoy myself

get drunk, get high, screw many

new cars, overseas trips are mine

loads of money, houses and goods

you do as you are told, not as I do

we look better, we smell better

standing tall, facing the bright sun

Source

heads bowed as we inch along

the broken steps, through the back door

the front door is a no-go zone

my skin is like a tanned hide

working long days out in the sun

I grin a shaky holey smile

I am not allowed to have fun

I receive welfare so I am scum

my job is to put others before me

it is wrong for me to want more

to want nice clothes and things

no laughter, no pleasure of alcohol

no relationships for you nor drugs

you are worthless, you are wasted breath

Source

shadows hide the light, making us one

the smell of sex, sweat and hopes

knows not the lines drawn in the sand

the vacillation of the body rolls

mirroring the congas beat hits

the tribal pull of raw grass roots

silences the k-chink of monies

the ability to make one laugh

blankets the reality of division

how big and powerful I make you feel

grows a giddy aphrodisiac

that I am much more than the label

hidden am I in the lulls of vision

one summer’s night in a Cuban Bar

One Sultry Night in a Cuban Bar made me feel

I agree with you Venkatachari. Not all places suit each of us all of the time.

Thankyou for giving time to my poem.

Very entertaining poem. A great presentation of the whole picture there. But, I might feel very uncomfortable in that environment.

What I like the most are transportation pieces like this. Oh do not get me wrong I know all about, planes, trains, cars, big wheelers and boats/ships.

What I mean is that you transported my mind. A special gift. I just love that. Thanks much.
