A Love Letter To My Mother

Dear Mom,

There is so much I want to say, but honestly, I do not know where to begin, you have gone through so much in years. From the death of a first husband when you were so young and meeting your second who gave all of us wonderful years. Many of us know there is always good and bad when you are being raised as a child, but I would have to say you did an excellent job with raising all of us. When you met your third husband after a divorce I do have to say that I have had the honors of having not one, not two but three wonderful men who I was always proud to call dad. People would say that being married that many times are dysfunctional but to me, I believe that people sometimes outgrow one another. You and your second husband remained close friends until his passing last year. Yes, you had your ups and downs but for someone reason, maybe it was due to the youngest siblings but you managed to forgive and forget all that both of you ever disagreed on.

When I was young I remember you bandaging my knees and kissing my boo-boo's. You taught all of us how to be little ladies you certainly did not wish for us to act like spoiled little brats! We learned manners, how to sit and when to keep our skirts down. I remember hanging from a tree in tights and a dress, boy you certainly spanked my bottom, as you know I never did that again. Spankings were allowed when we were growing up and it hasn't seemed to harm me in any way, it certainly did not make me cold or bitter a spanking here and there, it made me respect your point and now I realize what a hard head I was, but mom that is another discussion. I would love when Santa would come he was such a wonderful Santa and I was in awe that he brought us new pajamas and slippers every Christmas, I always thought that the other kids did something naughty because nobody else in the neighborhood had gotten new PJ's and slippers but us.

As I type this tears well up in my eyes because I know that now you are going through so much pain fighting cancer is hard, you not only have one type but you have four types of cancer. I am so happy that the brain is in remission, and I pray that the lung is too. I am thankful that the breast has not spread and I hope they remove cancer in the colon, sometimes I just go upstairs and cry but I know you are a fighter, I know that God has a plan for you and I pray that he does not take you anytime soon, of course all of us know that we do have a pessimistic sister but hey, I have always been the optimist and truly I try to find good in everyone, even when they upset me or break my heart. I have gotten that from you, people may say that you are naive', but what I believe is that you have given me a gift, it has been a beautiful gift, how many people can say that their heart is so giving? You have given me the gift of being creative, strength and belief in myself. You see mom although we may not have always met eye to eye on certain things you supported me regardless if I was wrong. You gave me wings to fly when I was young and pushed me out of the nest, the love you had when we hit the ground was the most unconditional love any mother could give. You let me back into the nest to gather my feathers and let me fly again until I was able to fly on my own.

There have been times recently when I have been snippy it is because I can only hope that you will be around for a long, long time. Besides my husband, you are my heart, my soul, my everything. I know I am like a mother looking after her child with you, but I knew from the time I was small that I would someday take care of you. I could not imagine living life without you, and when that day comes I have to understand that you will not be far away but will always remember that my heart is your heart I will always remember you carried me. There are so many more stories that I could write about, but you know that they are wonderful memories forever etched in my heart and locked in a precious box in my mind and that I thank you from the bottom of my heart to the tips of my toes.

I love you for so many reasons,

I love you because you taught me respect,

I love you because you did not ever neglect,

I love you because you allowed us to be children

I love you because you disciplined with love,

I love you because you taught me how to bake,

I love you because you taught me how to cook,

I love you because even when I failed you never gave up,

I love you because you make me smile,

I love you because you love unconditionally,

I love you because you never placed any conditions on me,

I love you because you believed in me,

I love you because through any sorrow you are my sunshine,

I love you for so many other reasons and these are only a few, but I love you simply because you are only you! Not only on any special day but I will love you forever and always!

A wonderful piece of work you have written. It is difficult to be there for our parents when they become ill, but there is no better place to be.

Our hearts long for them to get better and our minds flash memories of the past.

It sounds like you were blessed with a very spevial mother.

Paolocruz: Mom was a big part of my life and I wrote that for her on her last Valentine's day. She will forever be etched in my heart. Thanking you for taking the time to read my letter to my mother and I hope that people find comfort in knowing that our mother's are an important piece of our lives. When they are gone there is always an empty hole in our hearts.

Only a few people recognize nowadays that the very first people that should experience their love are their parents. Thank you for making this hub--it reminds me of a lot of things in life. I'm having so many feelings right now.

Glen Stok: I will light the candle each year on her birthday. I miss my mother so much. They say time heals; but there is and will always be a big hole in my heart for her. So I can relate and understand. Not only did I lost my mother in 2010 but we lost a wonderful dog nine days later and my Uncle died Mar 11, 2011. My mom was wonderful and I am grateful to be so much like her. She was my best friend. :)

Glenn Stok from Long Island, NY on July 29, 2012:

Your mom is to you as my father is to me. Although my father passed away over 30 years ago I still light a candle for him every year on his birthday.

As I read your hub about your mom I related to much of what you said as  things my father did for me. I am so aware that my caring attitude and my creativity came from my father. I can remember specific incidences that helped me grow based on things he said and did.

I can see that you became the wonderful person you are because of the great person your mom was.

I read some of the comments in this hub and I realize that your mom didn't make it. I am so sorry. I know how you feel, I already lost both parents. My Aunt died around the same time as your mom in 2010.  And she had a great effect on me as well. Very similar to you and your mom. Light that candle. She will see it.

Julianna (author) from SomeWhere Out There on July 23, 2012:

rajan jolly: My condolences to you to Rajan. I am saddened to by the loss of your mother. We have so many fond memories of them and they will always be in our hearts. Reflecting on that last Valentine's day I can still see her face as she smiled when I read it. I cried when I read those words to her and she kept saying, " Julianna stop crying I am still here." Writing these words makes me cry because I loved her so, so much. They say time heals your heart; but mine still has a long, long way to go. I miss her voice, her laughter and presence.

You will miss your mom Rajan and its okay to cry. Its the process we have to go through but we will see them again one day on the other side. Thank you for sharing your memories of your mom on this hub.

Julianna (author) from SomeWhere Out There on July 23, 2012:

FaithDream: They are in our hearts and what you will find on your journey is the words that you have written may still be hard to read. I miss mom so much; but she is still here with me. Remember we are 'our mother's daughter's. They are within in us. Everyone heals at a different pace; but when a mother passes its the hardest thing in life to experience. Thank you so much for coming by and hang in there, you are not alone. (( Hugs))

Rajan Singh Jolly from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar, INDIA. on July 23, 2012:

Julianna, your tribute to your mom not only formed a lump in my throat but moved me to tears as well, all the while I read your letter I visualised the times I spent with my mom and appreciate how caring and loving moms are.

Incidently, I lost my mom in Dec 2010 battling effects of a stroke, a failing heart and from the the effects of breast cancer and Alzheimer. She lost her memory completely during her last months and it was a torture for the family to see how a woman who was so active and full of life was lying so helpless. But till the effect of Alzheimer's took over totally she was concerned about the welfare of her children, even when she was suffering so much physically herself. Even today, these thoughts bring me to tears.

This is a very heartfelt outpouring of your love for your mom and your mom sure must have been very proud of her daughter when you read this letter to her.

FaithDream from (Midwest) USA on July 23, 2012:

This is a beautiful tribute to your mom. I came over to read this after you gently expressed comforting words on my tribute hub. Your passionate heart is resting on this page...longing...in memories of yesterday. As I read this I can see how blessed you are...Our moms may be gone but they are forever in our hearts.

Vincent Moore: It is one of the hardest things to get through. I don't believe we actually overcome the loss of our mother or father we just deal with life like they would ask us too. I still cry for my mom :(

Vincent Moore on May 14, 2012:

I wept alongside of you as I read this letter. The love for your mom poured from your soul sweet friend. I lost my mom a few years ago and I know the feeling and pain. Peace and blessings to you and big Hugs from me to you.

jecyl: What a thoughtful comment. Mom passed away in 2010 and this was the last love letter I read to her on Valentine's Day. I cried as I read it; but mom knew where my heart was all along. Tams R: I did tell her and remember her tears and the look in her face as she sat on the edge of my bed while I read it. I have not yet found Peace with mom's passing and my heart hurts everyday. When I think of her my heart breaks. I miss her so much that I do not always know what my day will bring. If I do not think about it then the day is good, but when I read words I have written I break down in tears. Thanks for taking time to read the words I wrote to my mom and one day I will find Peace.

Tams R from Missouri on February 26, 2012:

What a beautiful love letter and now tribute to your dear mother. I'm sure she was proud to be your Mommy.

What pulls my heartstrings in the sweetest way about this letter is you took the opportunity so often missed to tell her before she left this world of pain.

I pray you have found peace with her passing.

It has been a year and almost a month since she passed away and my heart still hurts for her. I still have trouble reading what I had written to her. I still cry. Sorry for the lateness. First time I read this letter, and as you told me, God took your mom last August for a BETTER life. The good thing is that Mothers are in us and living through us. They are in our everyday actions... and we keep on going. After a few tears, comes a relieve. After letting out held back emotions, we feel much better and ready to share and give.

maggs224 from Sunny Spain on July 22, 2011:

How wonderful it must be to have this priceless memory to treasure. It would have been wonderful if your mum had read it herself but to have the daughter who wrote it read it outloud to her with all the emotions right there for mum to witness must have blessed the socks off you both.

Jackie Lynnley: It was a letter to mom on her last Valentine's day. Her and I both cried when I read it to her. When reading it to her after I posted it, I remember she said, "keep going.". I did and it was so hard. Mommy's are the most special people and when gone they are deeply missed.

When my dad died my mom died too, although she lived another 10 years, within 2 years she had him alive again, just off somewhere. I may not always like what she says or does, I tend to bite my tongue with things that annoy me but I love her just the same. Thank you for your lovely comments and thoughts. :)

Harvey Stelman from Illinois on March 13, 2010:

There are many times in life that things get tougher than anyone can imagine, unfortunately we all go through these times. As we get older it is natural that more grief comes our way. This is unfair to everyone that experiences whatever brings the the pain.

I am empathetic to what you are going through, having lost both parents years ago. They say; "time heals all wounds." I do not agree with that. I have prayed for G-D to rest my parents souls every day, for years.

You are not at that point, and I pray it won't come for many years. In the meantime I know you are doing everything possible for her and will never stop. Your mom is always with you, in your heart and mind. I'm sure she knows how much you love her, like you know the converse.

Hopefully she will be living with you for a long time to come, and will be telling you things you have done wrong. That's something mom's do. May she dance at your sons wedding.

Writing things like this, I frequently place my foot in my mouth. I hope I didn't do it this time, you're too nice.

frogyfish: Thank yo for the wonderful and warm comments it is hard to say what you feel so a person just let's there words flow. I read this to my mom and she cried along with me. :( But it was tears of joy!

frogyfish from Central United States of America on February 16, 2010:

Very touching intimate emotions and reasons expressed - they both show your love for your Mother. When love is so deep, the pain of another is difficult to bear - but you can, for God loves you both, beyond any human ability.

It has been a long time since I heard Nat's song - it was quiet and beautiful also.

Thank you for sharing this loving tribute - and glad you will let your Mother read it.

Duchess: When I read it I kept crying and it took me 5 minutes to read it out loud. It was so hard, but she loved it. I honestly didn't mean to make anyone cry, it was just the words I felt when I wrote them.:)

Duchess OBlunt on February 15, 2010:

I'm reading this late at night so my defenses are down to begin with. The tears are flowing, but I have to finish. What a wonderful tribute to your mom! I'm sure she loved it, and thank you for sharing it with us!

Angela Blair: I read it to her yesterday evening and could not stop crying when I was reading it her. When I think of the words I still get choked up. All she kept saying was, " Come on keep reading, you can do it dry your tears." Goodness it was so hard to do. Thank you for reading about her.:)

Every mother wishes she had a daughter like you. Such insight and devotion is a tribute in and of itself to your Mom. God bless you both. Best, Sis
