A Glimpse Into someTrials and Tribulations of 2020

Life, for most, is usually a struggle at the best of

Times. Yet only a year ago, a Wuhan doctor died,

Exposing a devastating enemy before his untimely

Demise, and the world was transformed forever.

An unknown virus, made a cruel and effective use of

Modern technology, flying across the world like a falcon,

Devasting numerous lives and institutions in its wake.

WHO called it a pandemic, as humans began dying

In large numbers in Italy, Spain, America and many other

Countries. Soon the clarion call was unanimous: --wash

Your hands, social isolation, wear masks and protect the NHS.

China – in spite of fake news and conspiracy theories --,

Gave the genome sequence data to world scientists, while all

Lived in dread, of this lightning-fast adversary, called Covid-19.

Many were stricken, especially in frontline services,

Exposing the disparity when dealing with blacks and

Other minority groups in deprived areas, and

The wheels of trauma, began spinning in ghettos.

Soon mass testing was everywhere! ITU’s were

Struggling to cope; new hospitals built, and the search

For a cure, via drugs and vaccines, began in earnest!

They were all called Nightingale, though, perhaps

To ensure that Mary Seacole, didn’t outshine the Lady of the Lamp.

Anyway, soon our crucible of challenges began: viral

And racial pandemics, began to feed, like parasites, on

Our economic, social, cultural and domestic life,

Creating an avalanche of fear, loneliness and insecurity.

Big brother drew up lines of demarcation, creating disparity --

A ‘them and us’ kind of leadership, adding walls to callous hearts,

Engaged in bigotry and the dehumanization of kindred Spirits.

Legalized cruelty reared its ugly head, and the ‘I can’t breathe’

Plea of a defenseless human, only served to highlight an

Already systemic problem of the enslaved; serving to propel

The cause of Black Lives Matter; reverberating around the world.

I weep on a dark web of loneliness, as past regrets

Hangs on the nights of my thoughts like shadows,

As the moon wanes. I walk the streets as humans

Evade humans, either unable to, or not wearing masks

Walking to raise funds and hearts

But there’s good news too, and I see Colonel Parker,

A 99-yr old on his three-wheeled frame, lighting

A lamp as a beacon of hope, to inspire humans.

Roman Abramovich, offers lots of money and practical

Help to the NHS, and is immediately followed by many.

I hear claps on door-steps and praise for our health

Services, even while they are still struggling to get more

Ventilators; the basics of facemasks and PPE’s.

An election is held across the pond, with some crying

Fraud and spreading innuendos, tainting the aspirations

Of a people to the world; refusing to accept defeat, while

Close to 300,000 die from what we now call, the corona virus.

Sea-water caresses gemstones on the oceans bed, yet fishes

Mourn their plight, in this fisherman’s net of sorrows. Covid-19

Has created new arenas of terror, as the cosmos grasps this light-bulb

Moment, building a new world order in the heart of humanity.

Poverty, displacement and homelessness, are like sad sediments

Left behind, after the tornado-predator, has taken away our gold

And diamonds. Domestic issues and mental anxiety are rife!

Hope hides unseen –that spark so necessary, for the

Flame of tomorrow’s vision. The forgotten sleep on streets,

Even managing to smile, while others party and break rules,

In order to avoid going crazy in desperate family circles.

There are new Tiers of Lock-down, as well as a slightly

Different language to controlling the virus, called 'hands,

Face ... space.' Meanwhile, we await a family Christmas with

Bated breath, as well as a tussle between our Government

And Brussels, to get a semblance of a deal, for the Brexiteers.

Yes, My Dear. God is the Master Planner. How can He fail? Thank you so much!! Much Love.

Mary Norton from Ontario, Canada on December 16, 2020:

Manatita, 2020 plagued us, but I'm hopeful that the human spirit will triumph. Good will prevail.

manatita44 (author) from london on December 14, 2020:

I know you'll be ok. Yes, as we both know, Brahman is responsible for all things. Man thinks he is in charge but God only laughs. Nothing happens without being sanctioned, approved or tolerated in Paradise and the Ordainer is the only Doer. My way of agreeing with you, that all will be well in time. Om Shanti!!

Venkatachari M from Hyderabad, India on December 14, 2020:

Well done, Manatita my Bro. Your lines describe the real scenario in an excellent way and it is very touching to the heart.

I am very hopeful and confident enough that we will see the golden days again in a new disciplined and blessed manner.

Wish you a Happy and Blissful Christmas. Our Dhanurmasam season (the month of Pongal and Sankranti} has approached which is a divine month (16 Dec to 14 January) for us.

manatita44 (author) from london on December 13, 2020:

Me too. let us pray. Much Love. - Lantern

Linda Lum from Washington State, USA on December 13, 2020:

Manatita, you have summarized quite well the events of 2020. I feel rather odd, almost guilty, for being relative unaffected by the problems of Covid. The most difficult part of all of this within our family is the isolation. Thankfully, we have not been impacted financially.

I am hopeful and optimistic for the future.

manatita44 (author) from london on December 13, 2020:

Yes. I feel happy for you, the family. Let us be vigilante as we go forward to 2021. Large Chistmas celebrations won't help. We will need to rely on a vaccine

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on December 13, 2020:

2021 is going to be a rough year for so many. I feel blessed that our family is untouched by this madness. Let's hope and pray for a return to normalcy in the near future, my friend. Thank you for keeping it real, and blessings to you always.

manatita44 (author) from london on December 13, 2020:

Great to see you! 25 now on 26? When's your birthday? Much Love.

Li-Jen Hew on December 13, 2020:

Hi Manatita. You have summed up the year well. It's good to address the issues that are ongoing and unfortunately, the issues are not resolved yet. Good to see you creating new poems. Stay safe!

manatita44 (author) from london on December 13, 2020:

Namaste, mi Did ji

If you are into Christmas, hope your plans are going well. Thank you, stay blesed and Om Shanti!! Shukriya! Asamkhya Dhanyvaad!

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on December 13, 2020:

It’s a well expressed poem, assembling almost all the major concerns, fears, anxieties, and issues of this year, all around the World. People have lost their loved ones, lost jobs, have remained hungry, lived in fear.

I just wish that all this becomes a thing of the past soon.

As always, well composed and thoughtful. Thank you for sharing. Stay Safe and take care.

manatita44 (author) from london on December 13, 2020:

Thanks Bro.

I don't usually like doing it but it all helps. People are saying such nice things about this narrative poem! I wrote it for the radio as a request, but comments vary from 'masterpiece' to the suggestion that it should be preserved for history.

Thank you so much Bro. Peace.

manatita44 (author) from london on December 13, 2020:

Not that kind of New World Order. I speak of a heavenly one. A Golden Age. It may take 200 years or more but human Consciousness is changing for the better. Natures forces, Mother Gaia and so forth, are healing hearts in the midst of crisis. Thank you so much!

manatita44 (author) from london on December 13, 2020:

Thank you Rosina. These are tough times for many! Stay well and blessed

manatita44 (author) from london on December 13, 2020:

Indeed Bro.

To reflect on life or evaluate where we are going. Thank you so much!

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on December 12, 2020:

Manatita, this was a sublime poem and you have described the world’s current state with such expertise. Thank you for your insights and observations.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on December 12, 2020:

This one about sums up all the perplexing moments of 2020 across the globe.

While people are busy worrying about this virus and election chaos ensues, it causes leadership to definitely be lacking.

I had not thought about the New World Order for some time now, but you are correct...this is the perfect time for them to devise their plan.

Take care.

Rosina S Khan on December 12, 2020:

Fabulous poetry bringing up all the issues and concerns of the recent times. You couldn't have assembled everything and expressed it better. I really like the poetry. Thank you for sharing, Manatita.

MG Singh emge from Singapore on December 12, 2020:

Manatita, that's a nice poem. Makes one think.

manatita44 (author) from london on December 12, 2020:

Thanks Bro.

Sankhajit Bhattacharjee from MILWAUKEE on December 12, 2020:

a beautiful composition indeed....

manatita44 (author) from london on December 12, 2020:

Hi Patty.

Welcome here. I really appreciate you. Now as regards prophecies, they do exist. Yet God is not static and is in fact in motion at all times. Things change... always for the better. It is an ever-trancending universe.

Yet we grow in a spiral. America will be great again, but harmony and oneness must lead the way. Thank you so much for gracing my page!

manatita44 (author) from london on December 12, 2020:

Yes, my sweet.

As I have said, the cosmos is building a new world in the Heart of humanity. The Ordainer is always in charge and never fails us. Be brave, be cheerful

Much Love.

Patty Inglish MS from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on December 12, 2020:

This poem has a striking presence in writing style and truth.

Back in 8th grade, our monthly Scholastic Magazine listed predictions for 2000 to 2020 and it was incorrect on all counts. Nothing prepared us for these atrocities, but still there is hope, as you say. Thank you for this writing.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on December 12, 2020:

You have encapsulated all the dreaded results of the pandemic, the laying bare of inequities between the 'haves and have nots,' waiting for governments to take action to help people, plus the good actions of some people during this time of crisis. Let us pray for better days ahead and the solving of some long-standing inequities once this pandemic is at an end. Perhaps some good will come of this.

manatita44 (author) from london on December 12, 2020:

Ah Pamela.

Thank you so much! I don't usual put these pieces here. They are usual requests for radio or Slams.

You're the first and a great contributor. Bless you Pamela. Pray for my sister.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on December 12, 2020:

I think this is a beautiful poem that describes all the pain that humanity feels at this time. I love the phrase " fisherman’s net of sorrows," as it reflects our loss.

Thank you, Manatita, for another poem that says so much. Much love to you. God bless.
