In Part-2 of "The Songs I Like to Sing," I would like to present the songs of more singers that were my favorites as a teenager and as a preteen. Most of these songs allow you to dream, reflect and introspect. I loved to listen to them on repeat and sing to myself when I was very young. Here goes some of those songs:

1) “A Shoulder to Cry On” by Tommy Page

Tommy Page sang the lines of this song to his budding girlfriend (real or imaginary- not sure). I love the melody of the song, including the lyrics. He seemed to speak from the heart. Any girl would be moved to hear the lines from him and would consent to be his girlfriend. So, if he intended these for a girl he knew, I am sure, she accepted him as her boyfriend.

What was moving about the song was that when the whole world would fall apart, he would be there for her; he would be her shoulder to cry on and a friend to rely on. He emphasizes the fact that whatever was said or done between them, their love would continue.

2) “Because I Love You” by Shakin Stevens

Shakin Stevens is another great lover. He would go the extra mile to prove his love for his crush. For instance, he would swim the longest river just to call her name. He cited similar examples he would do for her just to have her. As another example, he would climb the highest mountain just to hold her tight. This way he proved his love for her. But he was humble with his words. He was worried she would let him down and could not muster up his guts to confess his love for her.

3) “Everything I Do, I Do It for You” by Brian Adams

Brian Adams was a great romantic at heart who was ready to try to work out his love for his significant other. He would not only try and even was ready to give up his life and die for her. There was nothing more he wanted out of the relationship. Because everything he did, he did it for her only.

4) “Sealed with a Kiss” by Brian Hyland

Brian Hyland sang the lines of this song very passionately. He was going to go away for the summer leaving his love behind, which he hated. However, he promised her he would send her all his love and dreams in a letter everyday sealed with a kiss. There were various ways he was going to miss her at every moment of his time during the summer, but he promised to write to her all about his feelings. He would be feeling so lonely that he made the choice of making a pledge to meet her in September.

5) “Always on My Mind” by Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson regretted not doing or saying things to his lover, which he should have. But he confessed that she was always on his mind. He asked for another chance from her, and he gave his word that he would keep her satisfied. He really wanted to amend his mistakes and start all over again with his lover.

I adored all those five songs as a teenager. Next comes up three songs I learned at school as a preteen. It was so long ago that I cannot remember the artistes who sang them.

6) “War Drums Beating”

War Drums beating out across the Western Plain

Cause the Indians worry us to war again

Soon from every wigwam do, the flying fleet

Indians coming answer to the war drums’ beat

Tumba Tumba Tumba Tumba Tumba Tumba

La La La La La La

This song was about the beating of drums by Native Americans to war with white men in America when Native Americans were the natives there, and the whites were there to conquer the continent. The Native Americans beat drums rhythmically, calling the whites to fight with them. Tumba Tumba Tumba was the sound of the drums. It sounded a bit scary.

7) “Far Far Away”

Far far away by the side of a stream

I had a little hut – my home and my dreams

The time of harvest- the girls they used to sing

A sweet little theme; my memory it rings

Oh! I hold my hopes- I’d love today to see my motherland.

That was a sad song about a young boy leaving home and going to the war in my country in 1971. It was a Bangla song translated into English. The young boy would be a freedom fighter. The boy knew he might not come home again. His heart was heavy at the thought. But he controlled himself, ready to face the war to fight for the independence of his country. However, he fully remembered the scenes from his country home and he longed to be home one day.

8) “Counting Colors in the Rainbow”

Counting colors in the rainbow

When the sun has made the rain go

When the sky is dark with stormy weather

Should we fear and tremble- never, never

For there’s someone else to take care of us forever

I count the colors in the rainbow.

The rainbow song, which I learned at school, was one of my favorites as a preteen. I loved that the song illustrated counting colors in the rainbow and how it consoled that we shouldn’t be afraid in stormy weather. Someone would take care of us. There was hope for the future. A rainbow was just the beginning of that hope.

Memories of these songs during teenage and preteen times come flashing back to me even today. I can’t help but sing them to myself and make a few moments of the day tick away happily and delightfully. I am able to get back to my daily chores, tasks and errands in great spirits and feel reenergized.
