The Day I Met My Online Friend In Real Life

November 13th, 2022. A date that will forever remain etched in my heart. It was the day when I finally met my online friend in real life. Ever since landing on the shores of Australia, I was super ecstatic about the fact that I will finally get to meet my friend of close to three years for the first time ever.

Okay, so to make this post a wee bit fun, I’m gunna write it as an open letter. Cool? Cool! So, let’s go.

Dear Jess,

I had been waiting for this day to arrive; prolly since the day we first met online on 5th March, 2020 (YES, I REMEMBER THE DATE). And I kid you not, I’ve literally played out scenarios in my head about how I’m gunna react when I meet you for the first time.

P.S: 99 times it ended up me shedding buckets and buckets of happy tears. And hey, don’t ya worry, I imagined that you were in happy tears too, ha.

But yeh, I was so looking forward to meeting you and was super over the moon when we decided we’d meet at the Junction Oval in Melbourne for the Women’s Big Bash League double header games (Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers, followed by Melbourne Stars vs Melbourne Renegades).

And I know how much you bloody love the Stars, and I do too, you know. So yeh, I was really hoping the team could pull off a good win against the neighbours.

Game Day & the Meet Up

I’ve been nervous before, yes. Plenty of times in the past, ha. And this time was no different (although I kept telling myself, come on Ron, you got this).

It was game day. It was officially meet up day as well. How cool, ha?! I couldn’t have been any happier. And although we kinda missed the first game, it was alright. Cuz the main game was about to begin. The meet up was about to take place.

I was bloody nervous. And then I received a text from you that you were sitting in the hilly area just opposite to us. Yes, I was excited, but also so damn nervous! We (my cousin and I) walked across to the other side of the ground. I legit couldn’t spot you, for real. But guess what, my cousin did.

He was like “I guess that’s Jess. She’s sitting right up there with her friend.” And I was like, “Err. Where? I can’t see!”. But then my cousin pointed, and in my mind, I was like “Is this really happening?” Honestly, I couldn’t believe it, ha.

We exchanged a warm hug and that’s when I was like “yep, this is real. It’s happening.” At that moment, I kinda was crying (happy tears) from inside. But held it up all in so darn pretty well, huh! Nah, legit wanted to burst out in tears, but we had an important game to watch and an important win was needed for the Stars, yeah.

Victory for the Melbourne Stars

For most parts, the Stars were behind the eight ball. But an exceptional knock by Annabel Sutherland (62* off 29) and not to forget her 3 crucial wickets in the first innings, helped the Stars will a thrilling game.

When 23 runs were required off the last over, I felt like they would lose. But then the unthinkable happened and Sutherland smashed 3 big sixes. How bloody good?

The win keeps Stars alive in the tournament, but only just, yeah? Still a few games to go, and I hope they can make the top 4. Fingers crossed for that, tbh.

Ending The Day On A High

At the end of the game, we had a nice little chat (mostly about cricket, of course). Also, we did manage to click a few selfies (which is amazeballs). Those first meet up photos (four of them) are defo going to remain in my heart forever. I love them so much!

All in all, it was such an amazing day! The cricket was absolutely brilliant (with the Stars pulling off a win) and we finally met in person for the first time. Honestly, I really thank God for all of this. Without Him, I wouldn’t have gotten this opportunity to visit Australia and meet you.

You’re truly one of the best people I’ve ever MET (I can finally say the word, yay) in my life, and I’m so bloody lucky to have you in my life. Cheers to our strong bond and never-ending friendship!

Lots of love to you, Jess! Always.

Much love,

Ron.
