Simply Wonderful Walk on the Planet

Patricia is someone whose life is centered around family. Each day is one more opportunity to show my loved ones how much they mean to me.

This article was published in 2019. Since then our world has been turned upside down with what we know as COVID 19 which has changed our lives tremendously.Social distancing, masks, and gloves have become a routine part of our day. Stay at home and save lives the mantra for many. Yet we can still find wonderful in each day.

As the years tick off, more stuff happens that is really part of this cycle we call LIFE.

One thing that is certain is that we will face the death of those we love and ultimately our time will come. To me it makes sense to squeeze every single drop of wonderful out of every day.

Learning to revel in the simple pleasures in life---what nature offers each day and the gentle interactions with others---is our gift to ourselves and to others.

Often I am asked how I am as others pass me and my response usually is : "Fine thanks and you? " However that has become rather lackluster and seems to lack sincerity.

My new greeting to others will be: "Simply wonderful and how are you today?"

However I have been known to say something corny like: "Any day on this side of the dirt is a good day!!" which I DO believe is true.

Happy 'Little Man'

To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter... to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.

— John Burroughs

Where Do I Find all of this Wonderful?

It may be difficult to find the 'wonderful' in a day when faced with personal issues that seem insurmountable. True, our lives can be filled with such situations.

It is how we choose to wade through them that is a true test of who we are.

  • Finding solutions to problems is not always easy nor is it quickly accomplished. When situations do present themselves that are extremely stressful, addressing them and accepting that they are in our face is a beginning to wading through them.
  • Find the wonderful in some part of each day. It is all around you. The miracle that you awoke to a new day is the beginning of your wonderful day.
  • Share your optimism with at least one other person each day.

Just Another Ordinary Day

The Beginning of Wonderful that Continues to this Day

Sometimes when our personal challenges are the greatest, a simply wonderful experience will arise. That has happened to me many times as I have been making this journey on this planet.Years ago my daughter, eldest grandson, Jay, and I were homeless. (That is a whole other long story. I wrote about this in detail here on HubPages.) During this time, Angels began to come our way.

How could we not feel that something wonderful was happening when:

  • our van was repaired when it broke down
  • our electricity mysteriously was turned on when we had not arranged it
  • our Christmas when the van was our home was spent with a loving local family. We absolutely felt blessed and knew that Angels were behind the wonderful things that came our way.
  • So many other wondrous such occurrences came our way during the time we were without a home.
  • And we never took them for granted.
  • We were so very thankful. Since then Angels have continued to appear in our lives.
  • We share our Angels with others at every opportunity and TRY to see the glass as half full.

A Man and his Dog

A Tiny Peek at the Video "Hachi"

Sometimes a Movie can be Simply Wonderful

How silly. A movie??

One movie that brought a feeling of wonderful to me and continues to each time I view it is Hachi. Hachi is a story of love and friendship and kindness between a man and his dog. You really must take the time to view this movie.

I had always wanted my sister Teresa to view the movie with me. She had never seen it. When I was in Austin, Texas, this summer, I bought a copy for us to watch. However, she was unable to view it.

While I was in Austin, I often went to HEB grocery store. One evening when I walked up to the store, there stood a man with his dog---a dog just like the one in the movie. That was another simply wonderful moment for me while I was in the midst of a most challenging journey. The photo above is of those two together.

When was the last time you spent a quiet moment just doing nothing - just sitting and looking at the sea, or watching the wind blowing the tree limbs, or waves rippling on a pond, a flickering candle or children playing in the park?

— Ralph Marston

Two New Angels helped Carry me Through a Difficult Time

At the beginning of August I had just spent time with my precious sister. She was terminally ill and I was blessed to spend the last four weeks of her life with her.

I have written about it here on HubPages so will not detail that whole experience.

But when it was time for me to return to Florida, I found that I was overwhelmed by the whole experience. Living the experience day by day I did not realize how it was impacting me.

However when I was heading home, I realized that it was an experience of a lifetime. I had made new friends in Austin. And I had become closer to my sister's youngest daughter. But the stress that I had not allowed to show its face while I was there, hit me 'bam' fully in my face.

As fate would have it, I was invited to stop in Houston to visit with a most amazing lady and her husband. They took me in and treated me like a princess. It gave me the opportunity to relax and just breathe. They both listened as I recounted the events of those four weeks.

It was a lovely time of getting to know two most special individuals whom I will always call friends. They drove me all over Houston to see interesting places which was a diversion I sorely needed.

That was a most simply wonderful time and one that I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to experience. Although I have told this lovely couple many times how grateful I am, I am not certain they really do understand how thankful I am and how much it was needed.

Just want to add that if either of them read this article, I hope they know this section is about them. Their kindness is still felt to this day.

A Beautiful Young Lady Celebrating Quinceanera in Houston

We Just Happened to be at the Water Wall

A young woman was celebrating quinceañera on the day we arrived at the Water Wall, a very interesting spot in Houston.

As we arrived, she and her entourage arrived and spilled out on the grounds of this magnificent sight. She was glowing and beautiful.

I did not know of this celebration. This is a time that celebrates a young girl's passage from girlhood to womanhood. The celebration occurs on her 15th birthday. It is a very special time.

Miss no Tiny Miracles

Every day there are many opportunities for each of us to feel joy.

Each one of us has stuff that tries to keep us from our joy, from our simply wonderful moments.

Learning to take time to just breathe is a choice.

It is too easy to get lost in the stuff and miss the moments that will never come again:

  • The moment to hug someone
  • The moment to see the sun rise or set perfectly before our eyes
  • The opportunity to say "I love you"
  • The chance to say ''thank you''

So many tiny miracles happen each day. These moments are the ones that can help us wade through the unwelcome stuff that finds its way into our lives.

This is wonderful, Patricia! I too realise much more now that the little things in life, along with the big and even the awful, should be celebrated. Good can come of just about anything, even though you think it's bad at the time.

You have a great outlook and philosophy on life and you inspire so many with your accounts of your life and your family.

Lots of hugs and lots of 'thank you's.

I love your new greeting, "Simply wonderful, how are you". It is certainy upbeat. I remember reading this article and I was sure I commented, but maybe I went off the page too fast. Or, maybe I am losing it!

I enjoyed reading this article again as it demonstrates to me how God is always in control and always there for us.

This is a genuine, well-written and heartfelt appreciation of life.

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on October 23, 2019:

Your reminder to smell the roses and enjoy each day is so true. We have so much to be thankful for, yet we tend to forget until a tragedy happens. I haven't seen the movie Hachi, sounds good. Thank you for writing a simply wonderful article. I believe in angels too.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on October 23, 2019:

That song "Ordinary Miracle" is so lovely. This is the first time that I have heard it. You are correct in saying that we should all appreciate the "ordinary miracles" that take place each and every day. Many people (actually, almost everyone at some point) go through rough times. It is so nice that you got to see parts of Houston like the Williams Water Wall while you were in Houston. It is one of our many attractions here in the Houston area. Thanks for the link to my article. I hope that this very day is one filled with many blessings for you and your family.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on October 23, 2019:

That was beautiful! I would expect nothing less from you, my friend. There aren't enough angels to carry the "feel goods" I want to send you right now. I guess I'll send them in shifts. :)

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on October 23, 2019:

Appreciating all the little things in life and expecting the best is how you live. Miracles have happened for sure. I read the hub about your 4 weeks, and that would affect anyone but then you had the Houston experience. This is a wonderful, uplifting atticle, Patricia. Angels are coming you way.

Lorna Lamon on October 23, 2019:

So true - it's all about taking time to appreciate the little things, which we often take for granted. A few years ago we had a 'hug' day in the city where we wore tee shirts which stated 'Would you like a hug'? The pleasure it brought cannot be measured in words but in the smiles of those who appreciated the gesture. It was a pleasure to read this article.

John Hansen from Gondwana Land on October 23, 2019:

What a touchingly beautiful article, ps. So full of positive vibes. I feel better for reading it. Thank you.

Eric Dierker from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on October 22, 2019:

We were just laughing at me outside. The temperature broke at 98 and there I was playing with the ball and laughing at the new stars. They say mine my time is near. Hope they are not counting for a long time i fear. let the angels sing in wait. Mine is not this date.

Clive Williams from Jamaica on October 22, 2019:

I feel your words. Love like there is no tomorrow. Life is short but precious.
