One Lone Soul

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

Article Summary

"One Lone Soul" is a short piece about learning what it is like to take someone for granted.

We all want someone to be there for us when we get older, but we don't appreciate what is right in front of us at the time.

I Remember A Time

I remember a time when I went out with guys just to see if I could make their heads spin.

Luckily it was short lived, but it was an exciting adventure.

It was a phase I had to go through to get past the pain I was hiding inside.

I Remember A Day

I remember a day when I heard a knock on my door. Someone stopped by unexpectedly.

We shared the afternoon together and had a wonderful time discovering the meaning of afternoon delight.

But he got upset when I asked him to leave because I had a date coming to pick me up.

I honestly didn’t understand why he was mad.

Afterall, I didn’t know he was stopping by and I had already made plans for the evening.

I guess I could’ve cancelled my date, but that would've been rude. So, I had him leave.

He never forgave me.

What Is It About Human Nature?

Later, when the shoe fell on the other foot, I finally got it.

It hurt so bad to think I wasn’t enough.

I was giving my all while he was still playing the field.

What is it about human nature that makes us so callous?

Do we think a good sex life is more important than having someone who truly loves us?

Do we all fear failure so much that we are willing to sacrifice true happiness?

For when we grow older, we realize what we’ve been chasing, but it’s often too late to turn back the clock.

We Want Someone

We want someone who will stand by our side.

Someone we can count on to have our back. Who won’t run the other way when times get rough.

That one lone soul who deeply cares for us.

Brenda - one of the things (among three or four others regarding health, happiness, etc.) I want for my kids, and tell them I want for them: someone to share it all with. I think I could and should add the lesson from your wonderful essay here of "knowing it when you see it." It would be well to recognize that when it's close to you, right in front of you. I enjoyed the essay, Brenda, and thank you for sharing this thought-provoking work.

Lora,

Thank you so much.

I'm glad you enjoyed reading this one.

It's a bit different for me to write an essay, so I'm glad my point came across.

Have a great day.

Lora Hollings on July 09, 2021:

I really enjoyed your essay, Brenda, and your thoughts about always looking for greener pastures. Is this something about our nature? That's a good question. Often times what we want most is right there within our grasp, but we fail to recognize it. You express yourself well on this topic and the quote is wonderful.

You cover so many things that many of us experienced as we grew up. Relationships are tough sometimes, but I think this is so true when we are in our late teens and early twenties. I really enjoyed reading your article, Brenda.
