Essay on Success Comes To Those Who Take Risks

If you risk nothing, then you risk everything.

— Geena Davis

For every individual in this world, the word “success” has a different meaning. When we see that we have achieved something that we had been longing for, we say that we have been successful in that endeavour. People have different goals in life, and to achieve them requires careful planning and hardwork. It's true that nothing can be achieved without putting efforts towards the end goal, but if we see around us, the fact of the matter is that not all hard working people find success in life. Definitely, hardwork is imperative to becoming successful, but that success can only bring you some amount of success. Risk is important when it comes to successfully achieving the big things in life. If everyone would have just followed a usual path in life, everyone on this planet would have been really successful in life. Great leaders, great individuals, great businesses, have all taken some amount of risk at some point in their lives, to become great.

The reason why some people take risks and some do not is that the end result of taking a risk can only be one of two outcomes, “success” or “failure”. Taking risks does not have to be random, a lot of thought processes should go into making decisions before taking risks. It is also true that we cannot predict the exact consequences of taking the risk, but we can calculate some of the outcomes of the risk. The risk should be taken after weighing the pros and cons of the opportunity at hand. Some may say that taking risks is like gambling. But when pros and cons are carefully weighed of the risk, at least one knows what can go wrong and that is what motivates them to find ways to overcome the cons and outweigh them.

If a person has the willingness to take risks, he or she finds ways to overcome the obstacles that may arise during the process, but if they do not have the willingness there is no way that you can even think of overcoming the hurdles. The most successful businesses and individuals in this world have taken the leap of faith at some point or the other, and that is why they have become “best” over time and not found success in a single day. By taking a risk, at least there is a probability of being successful, but until one takes the risk, one cannot determine at all whether they will be successful or not, because in a way they would have already given up.

Author J.K.Rowling, if she hadn’t taken the risk of writing Harry Potter novels, would not have been where she is today. If Warren Buffett would not have taken risks in investing, he would never have become one of the world’s most richest human beings. Where would Apple be right now, if Steve Jobs did not have the vision of creating something out of the box and would not have taken the risk of putting it out there for the world to see. Would Tesla have been this successful if Elon Musk would not have taken the risk of investing his resources in building an electric car company. NASA would never have been able to successfully complete one-of-its-kind expeditions to space if they were very conservative and did not take risks. There are plenty of such amazing examples of true successful stories in all walks of life, where people have found success only because they were brave enough to take risks.

Success is relative to all individuals, but taking a risk is what sets anyone apart from the rest. Risk is that key that gives an individual that extra edge to find unique success that one desires. Risk requires careful examination to be able to make an informed decision. To have extraordinary accomplishments, one needs to take risks, because as Swami Viveknanad once said, “Take risks in your life, if you win, you can lead, if you lose, you can guide”. Even if one fails, one only gains experience and the strength to do something further in life.

Thanks for the comment Ashutosh. It is true, taking risk can lead to either success or failure.
