The ABC Challenge
The article below is in response to one written by Pamela Ogleby called "The ABC Challenge" in which one writes about themselves using the letters of the alphabet. This was a harder challenge than I thought when I first started it, but fun also.
A for Affectionate
I am a big hugger and I love to give and receive hugs and affection. Growing up in a home where hugs weren't given out often, it was important for me to make sure my kids got plenty of them.
Fortunately, I married an affectionate husband as well, so we are a good match.
B for Blessed
I have had a lot happen to me in my life but through all of the bad things, I consider myself to be blessed. I feel God's presence with me daily and know He will help me get through even life's toughest challenges.
A few years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and after surgery and treatment, I feel even more blessed because I am still alive today to tell about it.
C for Christian
I am a Christian. I grew up in a Methodist church and now go to a Baptist church. I was saved at 14. When I was in high school I joined a Christian singing group and toured New England performing concerts in various churches. We even were able to go on a 3-week tour of Europe. My Christian faith is very important to me and I can't imagine my life without God.
D is for Doodling
A few years ago I took a class on creative doodling on a cruise ship. Ever since then I am hooked. I love to doodle and it helps me relax. I did take a Zentangle class also. There are a lot of rules that go along with the art of Zentangle and names for different designs.
I got a basic Zentangle kit that provided pens and small squares to get started with. Once I started with the small squares and circles, I graduated to full pieces of paper and love doing it now. I always have pens and pads with me to doodle with when we go on vacation and it's so relaxing.
I often use stencils to get a basic shape, and then just get creative.
Below are some of my designs.
E for eBay
I am an eBay seller so have my own online business. This is the work I do that earns me the bulk of my money and I am hooked on eBay. The Ka-ching of the cash register noise on my phone makes me very happy. It's one of my favorite sounds. If I hear that noise at night when I am sleeping, it makes me smile in my sleep!
I sell mostly men's and women's clothing and shoes, and then anything else I can find to make money on. Lately, I have been going to estate sales and finding lots of vintage items that my parents used to have in their home that is now worth money.
F for Friend
I have always tried to be a good friend to people in my life. I have had some friends for 40 to 50 years and my longest friendship has been with my friend Christine. We became friends in the 5th grade when we were assigned to work on a term paper about Abraham Lincoln in our English class. We became friends when we were 10 years old so that means we have been friends for 52 years this year!
G for Goal Setter
I am a huge goal setter. In fact, my friend Christine (from the section above) and I set goals every year in January and we check back on them halfway through the year to see how far we have come in reaching our annual goals.
Our goals include personal as well as financial goals and without this set of goals each year, I don't think we would have accomplished half of what we have done in our lives.
H for Honest
I am a person who always tries to be as honest as possible. But I also try not to hurt anyone's feelings. So if someone asks me a question such as "Do you like my new dress," but I actually don't, I will try to find at least one thing complimentary to say about it. Usually, I will tell them I love the color, or maybe the lace is beautiful, etc.
I for Introverted
At the core of my personality, I am an introvert. People are often surprised to hear that about me because when I am with friends I am outgoing and laugh a lot. But when I first meet people or am in a new situation, I am very quiet and shy.
I don't enjoy parties or going to places where I don't know anyone.
J for Joyful
I am an optimist by nature and each day I try to find joy, or add joy to my life. As a Christian, I often turn to Christian music to add joy to my days. Below is one of my all-time favorite pieces of music that fills me with joy every time I listen to it and watch it. The very end of this video is my favorite part...the musicians stop, but the music continues!

K for Kind
I always try to be kind. It's part of my nature I guess. When the pandemic hit and people were spouting the "be kind" mantra, I was a bit confused because I try to be kind every day in my normal life, pandemic or not.
L for Laughter
I laugh ...a lot. And I don't have one of those quiet, girly laughs. I laugh from the inside out and people have commented on how unusual my laugh is. I get it from my mom. Sometimes I laugh so loud people have asked me to tone it down. My husband never has, and I very much appreciate that about him.
M for Mom
I am a mom of three children. They are now grown but from the time I was a young child, I wanted to be a mom. When my first child was born, I cried tears of joy because my dream of being a mother was finally realized.
Below is a photo of me and my 3 children.
N for Naive
Yes, it's true, I am very naive. I think it's because I prefer to see the good in the world and I trust people. This can sometimes lead to a rude awakening for me, or to be the butt of family members' jokes!
O for Optimistic
I mentioned this above and I am very much an optimist and expect the best to happen. I also expect people to be their best and am always optimistic that people will put their best foot forward.
P for Passionate
Whether it is my love for my husband and family, or my love of helping people, especially helping them save money, I am a very passionate person.
Q for Quirky
People have often told me I am unique. And also the word quirky has been used to describe me. I see the world much differently than many people so when it comes to what I wear, my actions and my tastes in everything from my living space to the vehicle I drive, I am quirky!
R for Reader
I love to read and read for at least an hour every night before bed. I read mostly non-fiction because I enjoy reading true stories of how people have dealt with situations I myself have been faced with. I also enjoy learning new things and about new places so I enjoy reading about traveling to new places before we visit there.
S for Sentimental
I am SO sentimental it often results in having too much clutter. I saved many of my children's school artwork and many mementos of experiences I have had. I have a hard time letting go of things that remind me of happy experiences I have had, or special people in my life, both living and those who have passed on.
T for Truthful
I try to always be truthful because I am very honest and honesty and truthfulness go hand in hand. I try not to hurt people's feelings though, so I may skirt around questions I am sometimes asked. (See H for Honest)
But I have been diagnosed with Adult ADD, and along with that comes some episodes of blurting things out...always truthful things, but things that might be better left unsaid.
U for Understanding
I try to be understanding to all of the people I come across in my life. If I haven't been in the same situation they are currently in, I try to put myself in that situation so I can better understand what they are going through.
And if someone hurts my feelings or cancels plans with me, I listen to their reason and try to be understanding.
V for Volunteer
Since I was a young child I have always enjoyed volunteering. My parents were good examples of this as they always volunteered at church functions when I was growing up and brought us along.
Over the years I have volunteered my time with organizations such as Hospice, animal rescue organizations, local schools, teaching people how to save money with coupons, organizations that support the homeless, and local non-profit thrift stores.
I currently volunteer for Soldier's Angels, which supports current military members and veterans through letter writing and monthly packages. If you think you might be interested in volunteering for Soldier's Angels, please see the link below for information on how you can help.
- Welcome - Soldiers' Angels
Soldiers' Angels provides aid, comfort, and resources to the military, veterans, and their families. Will you help us support our troops?
W for Weird
Unique, quirky and weird are all words that have been used to describe me. I feel honored when someone uses one of those words to describe me. I enjoy living my life in my own individual way. I have never been one to just "go with the flow" and I live my life on my own terms. Some people think this is "weird." But just because I choose to stand out from the crowd, doesn't make me a bad person...just a bit "weird" by the world's standards.
I used to have a pin on my backpack that said, 'Why be normal?" I prefer to be weird!
X for Xenodochial
If that is a new word for you, don't worry, it was a new word for me as well. I looked in the dictionary for an adjective beginning with the letter x. This word was the one that closest fit my personality. It means, "friendly to strangers." I am not super gregarious because I am an introvert at heart, but I do tend to start conversations with people in line at a store, and always with children in line to keep them busy so their mom can take care of paying for her groceries.
Y for Young at heart
I am and always have been young at heart. I won't mention my exact age, but let me just say I qualify for senior discounts in many states! But inside, I still feel 18. I am fortunate to be in fairly good health and when other people my age start talking about all of their aches and pains, I feel blessed to not have any, and I think that keeps me happy and feeling young at heart!
Z for Zoo
When I was in my teens I volunteered at a zoo (there's that volunteer experience again that I forgot to mention above). My friend used to call me a "Pooper Scooper!"
At one point in my life, I wanted to be a zookeeper. But then I changed my mind when I realized that meant keeping animals in cages for their whole lives. That didn't feel right to me.
Sometimes I wonder if I had followed that path, a better choice than working in a zoo would have been to work in a rehabilitation center with animals who had been hurt in the wild. Well, it's too late for me to follow that path now, but that would have been a very rewarding alternative to being a zookeeper and probably would have required the same college education.
Well, there you have it...my own personal ABC Challenge. Now it's your turn. I challenge you to write an ABC challenge for yourself and share it with the rest of us!
