How special is the name 'Father' ?

Matthew 6:9-13 King James Version (KJV)
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

God is our Father. He is the one who created us and everything beneath our feet to above our heads. He is the creator of Heaven and earth.

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

But He is more than a creator, He is our Father.

I have heard some people say, "Creator says..." or "Creator did..." when they speak of our God who is our Father. To me this seems to diminish who He is and His greatness. After-all what is a creator compared to a Father.

A person who creates, such as a architect or a carpenter will design or build something and then be done with it. But a father has his children and loves and cares about them for the rest of his life.

A father is more than a creator.

The Lords prayer states, "Our Father which art in Heaven" not "our Creator which art in Heaven" because God (yes the one who created all) is more than our creator, He is our Father.

The term father has a more intimate and personal meaning than creator. A car company creates cars, computer companies create computers etc but a Father is personally and deeply involved with His children. He has a deep and emotional connection.

Sure a creator of something has a connection with what he creates, but it is not at all comparable to the connection between a father and his children.

Here are some verses to look at. There are so many verses with 'Father' in them. But I -for the sake of time-decided to only use these.

1 Corinthians 8:6 King James Version (KJV)
6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

Ephesians 4:6 King James Version (KJV)
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Here we can see how special the word father is, it says to call no man Father, it doesn't say call no man creator. Such a powerful statement. It enforces the name father and its importance. Matthew 23:9 King James Version (KJV)
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

A father can be a creator and when it comes to our Father God He certainly is an amazing creator. However He is our Father above all things.

This is something I am putting out there for you to think about. I am sure there will be some who read this and disagree with me. But it is something I have been thinking about and has struck a nerve with me. It is how I feel. Perhaps you feel different.

*Look up 'Father' in the word of God and I am sure you will see, as I have, how often 'Father' is mentioned and with how much emphasis and reverence.

      Thank you Eric, I also thought of the children who are without a earthly father as I wrote this. However, the good news is that they have a Father in our great God. Psalm 68:5

      Excellent. Really a great lay out of the distinction. It sadly made me think of men who help create a life and then are absent as a father. And it reminds me that there are those children out there that need more fathering from other men.

      Truly Our Father is Great.
