What To Do When Your Soul Is Downcast

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

One of the worst feelings in the world is for your soul to be downcast. Something might have happened to cause this condition; however, your soul doesn't have to remain downcast and disturbed. There are some things you can do to cause your soul to be lifted.

1. Immerse Yourself in God's Word

Read the word of God because there is absolutely no way your soul can stay down at the same time you are immersed in the word of God. Quoting scriptures you know will do the same thing if a Bible is not available for you to use.

Prepare yourself in advance by hiding God's words in your heart before your soul is at its lowest point. Then you can use God's word whenever you need a lift.

2. Meditate on God's Word

Meditating on God's word is very powerful. After you read His word, sit for a while and meditate on what you have read. Do what God told Joshua.

According to Joshua 1:8, "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."

3. Pray Without Ceasing

Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to pray without ceasing. That means we should make praying a part of us. It becomes a habit when we make it a part of our lifestyle.

We don't have to wait until bedtime to get on our knees to pray. We don't need to wait to bow our head over a meal. We don't have to wait until we gather with other disciples of Christ at church once or twice a week. We can pray automatically at any time and at any place.

4. Recall God's Track Record

Remember how your soul was lifted the last time it was down. Recall God's track record and do what you did the last time it happened. More than likely, you will feel better as quickly each time your soul is at a low point.

5. Encourage Yourself in the Lord

Reassure yourself that things are not as bad as you think they are. The enemy usually tries to make people think the worse. He plays tricks with your mind to make you think there is no hope and you are at the end of your journey. The devil is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44).

David did not wait for others to encourage him. He encouraged himself in the Lord. According to 1 Samuel 30:6, "David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God."

Be like David and encourage yourself in the Lord. As long as you believe God is with you, you will always have hope. And hope does not disappoint us (Romans 5:5).

6. Stay Positive

Stay positive. The best way to stay positive is to surround yourself with positive people. Keep about from complainers and negative people as much as possible. When your soul is down, you shouldn't be around people who will make you feel worse than you already do.

The worst thing you can do when your own soul is down is to hang around someone else whose soul is also down. That person won't be good for you and surely you won't be good for that person.

When you need to be lifted, stay away from dark places and negative people.

7. Thank God in Advance

You do not have to wait until your soul is lifted to thank God. You can begin to thank Him before you the manifestation takes place. You should have faith to thank God before you are lifted up.

When you have done the above seven things, your soul will be lifted quickly and you will feel so much better. Hopefully, your soul won't be downcast or disturbed within you any time soon. However, when that unpleasant feeling happens, you will be back on the right track very soon if you use the spiritual disciplines outlined in this article.

  1. Read God's word.
  2. Meditate on God's word.
  3. Pray without ceasing.
  4. Recall God's track record.
  5. Encourage yourself in the Lord.
  6. Stay positive.
  7. Thank God in advance.

This is really helpful! I read my bible daily and copy down everything I read that I have highlighted. You are right if you immerse yourself in the bible. it is hard to be downcast.
