Why Is Your Cup Not Running Over?

May He grant you according to your heart's desire, and fulfill all your purpose. (Psalm 20:4)

People want many things in life, including the following:

  • a successful career
  • peace of mind
  • good health
  • a sound mind
  • a loving family
  • healthy relationships
  • financial freedom
  • joy
  • respect from others

The question is: "Why don't they have these things?"

Most people want these or similar things. God wants them to have these things. So, why don't they have them? Why is their cup not running over with good things that they want? There are several reasons people do not have what they want.

Reason One

You don't DREAM of yourself having what you want.

One of the main reasons you do not have what you want is because you can't imagine yourself having those things. You think those things are for others but not for you. You don't constantly dream that you can have them. Therefore, you dismiss them as unattainable.

People who dream of getting what they want get it more often than people who don't. Imagine yourself having what you want before you have it. Then getting it will be easy.

Most successful basketball stars will tell you that they have already made the winning shot in their mind before they make it on the basketball court. Winning Olympians have seen themselves standing on the podium receiving their gold medals years before they actually compete. So, whatever you want, see yourself having it before it becomes a reality.

Reason Two

You do not think you DESERVE what you want.

Somewhere in your subconscious mind, you think you do not deserve good things and the fruit of the land. You have been conditioned to lack all your life, and that is the only thing you know. You have believed you don't deserve what you want, so you settle for much less.

In order to have what you want, you have to believe that you deserve what you want.

Reason Three

You do not DESIRE what you want.

This might seems strange, but you do not desire what you think you want. Often you say what you want, but you really don't desire it enough. Sometimes you want something just because someone else has it, and it is not really your personal desire. God didn't promise to give you the desire of someone else's heart. According to Psalm 20:4, God promised you the desire of your own heart.

Here is a very good example that many people can attest to. You say you want money and lots of it. However, you do not want money. Let me prove it.

If you wanted money, you wouldn't spend it, exchange it, or give it away. You would just keep it whenever you get it. Money is not the primary thing you want. You want what money can buy and the power that goes along with it. You want the feeling that you get when you have money in the bank or in your wallet.

Perhaps it's a car or a house that you want. So, why not desire the car and not the money. Perhaps, someone will give you a car or you could get it some other way without you having the money for it. Stop desiring money and desire the thing money can provide.

Therefore, desire the primary thing (car, house, success) and not the secondary thing (money).

Reason Four

You don't DARE to get what you want.

Some people are not successful because they are afraid of success. They fear what goes along with being successful. They don't want to be the exception. Therefore, they become complacent and stay with their unsuccessful friends just so they can fit in.

Someone once joked that Peter began to sink when he stepped out to walk on water like Jesus told him to because he looked back and saw his friends who were not told to do the same (Matthew 14:29).

Once people give up that mentality, success for them will be inevitable. Dare to be successful, and you will be. Dare to get what you want, and you will get it.

Reason Five

You DENY the possibilities of getting what you want.

You don't have what you want because you deny that it's possible. You keep saying you don't have those things. Every time you say you don't have what you want, you are giving power to "not having what you want."

Proverbs 18:21 says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." Say you have what you want until you get what you want.

Say what you want instead of what you don't have.

Tips for Getting What You Want

If you really want something, try following these instructions and see how quickly you will have exactly what you want.

  1. Dream daily about what you want.
  2. Know that you deserve to have whatever you want.
  3. Desire whatever YOU want and not what someone else has.
  4. Dare to get what you want.
  5. Don't deny that you will get what you want.

Thanks, Deborah, for following me on HubPages and for commenting on this article about the reasons a person's cup is not running over.

I try to check myself often to determine any of the five reasons apply to me.

I especially like number three. Most people do not know what they actually want. And often, the things they say they want are a contradiction. Such as, I want a lot of money, and I don't ever want to work. Or I want to be thin and I also want to eat cake. First, get clear on what you really want. Then, you can have it.

Also, I like what you say about people denying what they want. They are afraid to actually get it, in my opinion.

People are afraid to have what they really want, because they might find out that things don't make you happy.

      Thanks for another great article.
