Perfection vs Imperfection

Linda (Kaywood) Bilyeu is a self-published author. Her books are available on Amazon. She writes from the heart—there is no other way.

Perfection is a myth...

To Be or Not to Be Perfect

Who wouldn't want to be perfect? Have the perfect body, relationship, career, children...in other words, the perfect life. I'm here to inform you that this is most likely not possible.

Yes, you heard me correctly, perfection doesn't exist. Perfection is a myth that we thrive for, but never achieve because it's not reality.

There are flaws in everything and everyone. I understand you are devastated at this point, as I was, when I figured it out.

Don't kill the messenger! Who needs perfect?

Flaws aren't all that bad. Flaws make us more interesting. They make us unique. We learn from them. We grow from them. We cry, but we eventually get over it.

We learn to accept our flaws and maybe even appreciate them. Without imperfections, I personally think we would be a boring society.

Take a moment and imagine a room full of perfect people. From head to toe they are illuminate the images of perfection. No visible flaws amongst them. If you notice this room full of people aren't mingling or even smiling, they are bored beyond tears because they have nothing to discuss. Why? Because they are so similar.

Now, I ask you again...do you really want to be perfect? Or will you be happy with a bit of imperfection?

P- Perfection? Who needs it? Certainly not I nor you.
E- Everyone is unique and wonderful...defects and all.
R- Rock star status regardless.
F- Flaws are most likely present with everyone. It could be worse.
E- Enjoy your imperfections, they're yours and no one else can have them.
C- Carry your head high and let the world know that you're not perfect.
T- Teach others about your flaws and maybe how to improve theirs.
I- I thoroughly appreciate my imperfections.
O- Only you have the power to control your perfections or imperfections.
N- Never deny not being perfect.

Comparing Perfect vs Imperfect

Which definition better describes you?

1. Lacking nothing essential to the whole; complete of its nature or kind.
2. Being without defect or blemish.
3. Thoroughly skilled or talented in a certain field or area; proficient.

1. Not perfect.
2. Having defects or blemishes.
3. Skilled but not completely.

Perfect seems like to much work. You need the motivation, drive and falsehood to be perfect. I continue to stand by my belief that perfect is just BORING.

If we were all perfect and lived in a perfect world with the perfect surroundings HOW can we improve ourselves?

So I suggest we stick to being imperfect and accept our flaws. We can give the perfect world to the perfect people who consider themselves to be perfect until they realize they aren't and join us on the other side.

Then we can all live happily ever after swapping ideas on how to improve our defects.

PINK - F**kin' Perfect (Parental Advisory Suggested)

Top Ten Signs You Might Not Be Perfect

10 -You have had no cosmetic surgery procedures.

9 - Your credit cards are maxed out to keep up with the joneses.

8 - You tell tall tales to make yourself look better.

7 - You have so many addictions AA knows your DNA.

6 - Your Golf Club membership is about to expire and you pawn your kids to get a renewal.

5 - Your private jet has more frequent flyer miles then Air Force One.

4 - Your flaws are top secret and the CIA can't even crack the code.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on May 25, 2012:

Welcome to the imperfection club Audrey!:)

Barbara Purvis Hunter from Florida on May 24, 2012:

As always you are great in whatever you write. I am never surprised, just happy to have time to read others hubs.

This reminds me of a charm my mother gave me---it was a gold Angel with a sign that read 90% Angel, and a little note from her that said--And we will not talk about the 1%. So, even to my mother thought I was not perfect---. And I thought I was---bummer!

Take Care,

Your Hub Friend,

KDuBarry03 on May 24, 2012:

We are beautiful no matter what they say; words can't bring us down :)

The only similarity life has is this: we are different. The only shame we can bring ourselves is striving to be perfect. What is perfection anyway? The private jets, silk smooth slim body, millions of dollars? I rather be myself, as you said Sunshine, for we're only human :)

Great Hub! Voted Up :)

Audrey Howitt from California on May 24, 2012:

I guess I am way up there with the imperfect crowd! Made me smile today !!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 18, 2012:

Very valid points Robie! Thank you for sharing!:)

Roberta Kyle from Central New Jersey on March 07, 2012:

Not only am I not perfect, I don't even want to be. One of the perks of getting older, I think-- I'm now so comfortable in my own skin I just don't care anymore and now I find out that nobody else ever did care anyway LOL Lovely reminder, sunshine-- voted up and awesome

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on November 27, 2011:

That was a joke Ray...you are always welcome :))

Raymond D Choiniere from USA on November 27, 2011:

You think? That in and of itself is funny. LOL! LOL! I was just trying to point out what you said in the article Sunshine. People cannot ever be perfect, but specific things can be perfect, if you're looking at it from a specific perspective. That's all.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on November 27, 2011:

Thanks for stopping by Ray! I think:))

somethgblue from Shelbyville, Tennessee on November 27, 2011:

Oh Casgil,

Are you lonely, not breast fed long enough?

Feel free to visit anyone of my hub articles and try to pick a fight with me, of course arguing with an unarmed adolescent isn't much of a challenge, I will endeavor to lower my intelligence to your level!

somethgblue from Shelbyville, Tennessee on November 27, 2011:

progress not perfection . . . is the only thing I can claim to be good at, of course when you start at the bottom, you can only move up!

In your profile you say that your opinionated which hub are you referring too, as I love reading opinionated people's views, they are so much more interesting than, conformists!

Raymond D Choiniere from USA on November 27, 2011:

Hey Sunshine, I enjoyed your hub. It reinforces what I said to someone else in the forums at one time. Someone decided to argue with me that perfection was real and not a myth. I tried to explain to them that their thinking was flawed in itself, but they kept telling me I was the one who was wrong. Perfection is nothing more than an idea(concept) which in our duality life has an opposite we know as imperfect.

Yes, each person has flaws and every person would be better off by accepting those flaws. No one is perfect and anyone who thinks they are perfect are just deluding themselves. However, on a different perspective "perfection" can be a reality if you truly want to think about it on a deeper aspect. Example: You can draw a perfect circle or square. It can be done. If you look at the Earth, it's a "perfect" place where life is habitable for human life, because it has all the resources we need to survive. But, perfection with regards to our individual self, we cannot ever achieve it. Great hub! :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on November 27, 2011:

Wow somethngblue that was awesome and dare I say a nearly perfect comment :)

somethgblue from Shelbyville, Tennessee on November 27, 2011:

OK, Here is a thought, work with me 'cause my thinking ain't perfect.

God realizing she wasn't perfect, decided to create Billions of Universes with Billions of imperfect beings in them. These imperfect beings only true destiny and purpose was/is to return to the source, however to do this they had to get as close to perfection as possible. Then when all of the imperfect beings (present company excluded, of course) had achieved their perfection and returned, she then would be a little closer to perfection.

She could do this little experiment over and over again until she got it right or just for laughs. Considering the human race she must have a really good sense of humor!

Kelly Umphenour from St. Louis, MO on November 13, 2011:

That song has been going through my head all day!!!

And again! Oh lord it's hard to be humble...! Lol. Shake ya groove thing :-) haha

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on November 13, 2011:

I absolutely agree 110% Real Deal! "Ain't nothing like the real thing baby, ain't nothing like the real thing." I broke into song again ... my fun imperfect habit!:))

I also agree with you DzyMsLizzy....they can keep their planet, our planet may not be flat but it's perfect to us:) LOL

Liz Elias from Oakley, CA on November 13, 2011:

As I always say: "Anyone looking for perfection is on the wrong danged planet!"

Kelly Umphenour from St. Louis, MO on November 13, 2011:

Sunshine - you are singing my tune girlfriend! I love this - and exactly why I chose REAL housewife for my name here - I decided I wanted to explain in one word what I am all about - I didn't want to make any false promises - I'm just real, that's all. It's so easy to not be perfect for me!!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on November 13, 2011:

Awwwww Thank you for all the wonderful comments that somehow slipped by me! You near perfect peeps truly do rock!:))

Great hub sunshine Im proud to be imperfect, and I agree it is a myth. Even a supermodel in a magazine looks perfect maybe but we all know it's all fake. Embracing our imperfections is a good thing. :) ge

Suzie from Carson City on September 30, 2011:

Sunshine...I just realized you ARE perfect! Perfect for what ails us!

Liz Elias from Oakley, CA on September 29, 2011:

You're right--perfect would be boring. You have tapped into one of my favorite sayings (made up by yours truly), for use in instances when people are being just a bit too anal and nit-picky: "If you're looking for perfection, you're on the WRONG planet!"

Voted up!

Yvonne Spence from UK on September 29, 2011:

Interesting hub. I like the first definition of perfect. With it everything is perfect, since we are all really part of a great big whole, however perfect or imperfect we may feel.

Marisa Hammond Olivares from Texas on September 29, 2011:

Ahhh this hub is GREAT! I loved it!

Just yesterday - one of my students' , "Miss, do you know everything?" - she was actually serious - I laughed and very passionately exclaimed, "No! and I don't want to! I want to be a life long learner. What would I have to live for if I knew everything?" - silence, crickets begin to chirp, I realize I have a class full of pre-teens staring at me with HUGE question marks over their head. Finally a student says, "you're weird" and they continue their work. LOL

AAAAhhhhhhh to be a child again! If I knew then what I know now...

Tim Mitchell from Escondido, CA on September 29, 2011:

Kim Harris on September 29, 2011:

Thank you Sunshine625. I needed that today. I have a new boss who has unrealistic expectations and then nitpicks when something isn't perfect. I let it get to me yesterday. I saved the "choose happiness" pic to use for a screensaver. Loved the pink video.

Susan Zutautas from Ontario, Canada on September 29, 2011:

Enjoyable hub Sunshine. I have not heard Mac Davis in quite sometime, I used to watch his TV show that was on for a short time and have always liked his voice.

I have to agree with what Rosemay said life would be boring if we were all perfect. Have a Great Day.

Frannie Dee from Chicago Northwest Suburb on September 29, 2011:

This is a great Hub to start the day. Thanks, I needed that.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on September 29, 2011:

Thank you for sharing cousin fudd :)

Cousin Fudd on September 29, 2011:

Great hub, I gotta be me. I like this verse from the book of Romans 9:20-Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? God made us all unique with innate abilities but sometimes maybe we all ponder just what the heck is His plan for me.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on September 10, 2011:

I'll add amusing to your resume leroy! :)

Brian L. Powell from Dallas, Texas (Oak Cliff) on September 10, 2011:

I have heard Mac Davis sing that song in years. Thanks for the blast from my past.

FYI - Except for my tendency to exaggerate the truth, I am perfect in every way. I am humble too.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on September 04, 2011:

You are welcome, I'm glad I could help :)

LeeLeePortCity from Wilmington on September 04, 2011:

You are very welcome new friend and follower. I'm honored to have made you laugh :))

Rosemary Sadler from Hawkes Bay - NewZealand on August 30, 2011:

I just love this hub.

Your 'TOP TEN SIGNS YOU MAY NOT BE PERFECT' is just wonderful. The world would be so boring if we were all perfect. I mean what would we find to gossip about.

Thank you for starting my day with laughter.

Up and away in every way

Suzie from Carson City on August 30, 2011:

thoughtforce.....Now you shared a forceful thought!! When you place "perfection & "mental disorder" in the same sentence....you're right. We can literally drive ourselves CRAZY...striving for perfection. The protection from that would be...be happy with GOOD ENOUGH...yes?

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 29, 2011:

Hi Tina! Welcome to my hubpages! I'm sure we'll get along just fine :) thank you!

Christina Lornemark from Sweden on August 29, 2011:

This is a wonderful hub Sunshine! As you say, without imperfection life would be so boring and meaningless. Perfection is for robots, and yet we strive to be perfect! Perfection in humans is more like a mental disorder! I love this hub and your sense of humor:))

Voted up and awesome!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 23, 2011:

Sunshine, I really appreciated your hub you did a great job! I always tell my husband that he is "perfect"...perfect for me in every way.

Voted up and PERFECT - oh wait, it will have to be AWESOME, I guess HubPages doesn't believe in rating perfect hubs yet LOL.

Annie Fenn from Australia on August 20, 2011:

I love this Sunshine625 and guess what - I also love my imperfections.

If people only heeded your wise words here, there would be no need for greed and all the negatives it brings because people equate wealth and power and having it all, as perfection. Oh how wrong they are!!!!

Very well spoken, voted up and awesome by me!!!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 20, 2011:

Excellent point kanni!!! Thanks for that reminder :)

Kannibalc on August 20, 2011:

If flaws didn't exist we would not even have "perfection" because you would have nothing to compare to to strive for something greater.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 20, 2011:

Awwww Mentalist...your words were near perfect!!! Thank you for sharing :)

Mentalist acer from A Voice in your Mind! on August 20, 2011:

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 19, 2011:

I never heard it until now and I appreciate you bringing it to my hub for everyone to hear. There's nothing like some good country music to make a hub ALMOST perfect :-)

WillStarr from Phoenix, Arizona on August 19, 2011:

I loved that song and Mac Davis for having the courage to sing it! What fun that was. Thanks for the video.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 19, 2011:

WillStar - Thank you so much for the lyrics! I added the Mac Davis video in your honor! What a GREAT song from a good ole country boy! :)

WillStarr from Phoenix, Arizona on August 19, 2011:

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble

when you're perfect in every way.

I can't wait to look in the mirror

cause I get better looking each day.

To know me is to love me

I must be a hell of a man.

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble

but I'm doing the best that I can.

I used to have a girlfriend

but she just couldn't compete

with all of these love starved women

who keep clamoring at my feet.

Well I prob'ly could find me another

but I guess they're all in awe of me.

Who cares, I never get lonesome

cause I treasure my own company.

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble

when you're perfect in every way,

I can't wait to look in the mirror

cause I get better looking each day

To know me is to love me

I must be a hell of a man.

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble

but I'm doing the best that I can.

I guess you could say I'm a loner,

a cowboy outlaw tough and proud.

I could have lots of friends if I want to

but then I wouldn't stand out from the crowd.

Some folks say that I'm egotistical.

Hell, I don't even know what that means.

I guess it has something to do with the way that I

fill out my skin tight blue jeans.

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble

when you're perfect in every way,

I can't wait to look in the mirror

cause I get better looking each day

To know me is to love me

I must be a hell of a man.

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble

but I'm doing the best that I can.

We're doing the best that we can

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 19, 2011:

Hi Sunnie! I thought I was perfect until I added my flaws up and said OOOOPS not in this lifetime maybe in my next! Seriously though perfection is time consuming and a waste of brain cells! Thank you for stopping by :)

Dave...You are close enough :)

Dave Ligler on August 19, 2011:

I am perfect ! Oh wait saying that makes me imperfect ! You are so right Perfect takes too much work and obviously not worth it. I'll stay imperfect, thank you. Great hub and really made me think.

Sunnie Day on August 19, 2011:

Hi Sunshine what a great hub..I love what mcgreg said..that is me too..who wants to be perfect? Who is to say what that is anyway..if we want to strive to be perfect then the heart is the one thing that should be worked on..the outer shell just gets old and wrinkly and we have wasted valuable time for nothing..Wonderful job my friend..enjoyed this so much..
