New Year Resolutions-What the Millennials Need to focus on

As one year comes to an end and a New Year begins to dawn, people get busy making a list of the resolutions to be followed, the following Year. The New Year brings hope, joy, and excitement. Let us make this year a memorable and successful one, the beginning of a new decade, with new goals to achieve and renewed hope for the future. Let us not forget that we can all be agents of change and contribute to make the world a better place and let us start with resolving to do our bit towards that goal. More importantly, the younger generations have a major role in addressing issues that impact their lives and their future. The youngsters of today are the leaders of tomorrow. They can play an important role in influencing crucial matters of the world by participating and making their voices heard. So here is a list of things the millennials need to focus on, for a better tomorrow:

1. Physical and Mental Health

The Millennials, especially the Students and youngsters need to take care of their physical and mental health in order to achieve their goals. They need to be there for each other and support each other during a crisis; thereby many lives can be saved as the incidents of suicides among young people have risen alarmingly in recent times. As the saying goes ‘Sound mind in a sound body’, Physical fitness is equally important and should not be neglected. Fitness goals are very important as a fit young generation can be productive and successful.

So this New year let us be more responsible for our own health and the health of our dear ones by focusing on mindful eating, workout, sustainable food, lifestyle, and fitness. Let us make physical and mental health the first priority in the list of goals to achieve this year.

"Let our New Year's resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word."

Goran Persson

2. Influencers in the Socio-political Environment

The young generation of today can influence the socio-political scenario in a county by protesting against injustice, corruption, crime and participating in campaigns for the welfare of the student community, society or country. Educational Institutions should encourage students to speak their mind as this will enable them to become better leaders. Freedom to expression aids in building the strength of character and confidence in the young generation. So we need to be fearless and voice our opinions and fight for justice and peace in the world. So let us resolve to work towards a fair, just and peaceful year.

3. Protectors of the Environment

The fast depleting natural resources and the degradation of the environment are issues of serious concern today and the young generation can play a major role in protecting the environment as their future depends on it. It is encouraging to see more youngsters coming together to create awareness of protecting the environment and the planet. They need to resolve to protect the environs from further destruction by involving more in campaigns on environmental protection and sustainability.

Apart from buying eco-friendly, organic and sustainable products, decluttering your wardrobe by giving away what you don’t need or reusing, going for recycled products, assessing whether you actually need to buy, are a few simple changes which you need to incorporate in your lifestyle to contribute towards sustainability. Women need to opt for beauty products that are natural, organic, which do not harm animals and are ecofriendly.

5. Interesting Activities along with Academic excellence

The young generation has to focus on achieving academic excellence and develop good skills as a literate and skilled generation can help in economic development and all-round progress. At the same time creating something interesting or something that you are passionate about should be among the goals as it will keep you engaged and happy. A life without passion can be dull and monotonous. Books are a constant source of inspiration and knowledge. Maintain the reading habit. Attend seminars, conferences, and other training programs whenever the opportunity arises and learn the latest methods and practices related to your work.

6. Participate in Social Service and Healthcare

Millennials have an important role in poverty and disease eradication in the world. They can participate in the programs initiated by the government and world organizations to ensure health, primary education, food and shelter to the needy. They can start by involving in activities for educating the poor children in their spare time. True happiness lies in doing good to others. The sense of achievement and happiness you feel when you help someone increases the happy hormones in your system which is good for your physical well being.

"The Essential goals of human life are renunciation and service."

"Awaken the inner soul and all that you require will come to your system."

Swami Vivekananda.

7. Quitting Addictions

The young people should resolve to quit addictions like smoking, alcohol, junk food which are all detrimental to health. And develop good hobbies instead, like gardening, organic farming, learning to play musical instruments or dance, reading inspiring autobiographies, traveling to interesting new destinations, writing. Whenever you start craving for the addictive, immediately replace the thought with a better or healthier option. For example, if you crave for a cigarette during a stressful situation, take a stroll or deep breathe instead and see how the craving disappears.

9. Take a Digital Detox

Millennials live in a social media-obsessed world today. Several studies have shown that addiction to digital media is the cause of various disorders like anxiety, sleep disorders, relationship issues, breakups, depression which affect overall mental well-being. So taking a digital detox is very crucial for mental health and improving productivity. Practice abstaining from social media for a few hours a day. Keep your phone aside or switch off your phone for a few hours a day and refrain from surfing on the phone just before sleeping. Read a book instead, listen to music, spend more time with children or pets, take a walk, cycle, swim or take to some sport and see how the quality of your life improves.

So let us resolve to switch off from digital media more this year and spend quality time with our near and dear ones and make this a great year.

10. Be an agent of change

Be it gender violence, or ecological destruction, and social injustice of any sort, the young people need to raise their voice against them, create awareness, start campaigns and help in formulating stringent laws to protect the vulnerable and be an instrument of change in the society. In these times of insecurity and unrest, the youth of today have an important role in peacebuilding and peacekeeping and their contribution will benefit themselves and the society also. Mahatma Gandhi the great leader and freedom fighter of India considered youth as the agent of social transformation and that they should be actively engaged in the social initiatives to build a healthy society by upholding the values of truth and non-violence. They should be guided to take the right path and not fall prey to anti-social elements and fanatics. So let us resolve to raise our voice and fight against atrocities this year and make the year and the decade a healthy and safe one.

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

Mahatma Gandhi

Connecting with friends or groups can help to share ideas and involve in good campaigns and spread awareness. Give priority to travel. Travelling can give you a better understanding of what is going on in the world around you and at the same time, you can learn about different cultures and enhance your creativeness and knowledge.
