Life's Journey - "I Will Sail My Vessel Till the River Runs Dry"

Each Day's A Constant Battle

You know a dream is like a river. Ever changin' as it flows. And a dreamer's just a vessel that must follow where it goes. Trying to learn from what's behind you and never knowing what's in store makes each day a constant battle just to stay between the shores.

Garth Brooks sang the song. The words describe the journey. The journey describes a life.

In anyone's life, you have an ever changing dream. A dream that meanders like a river, through past memories and choices along with battles that rage, in your head, between expectations and visions.

I hadn't thought about my life as a journey as I moved through my life; instead, each time I made a choice, I felt that it was my ultimate destination. But then, I would get to that spot and soon find myself thinking "Am I here? Is this it? Am I supposed to be happy now?" And then the struggle would begin. I wasn't sure I was happy. I'd reach a point where I would feel like I had stopped moving, growing, dreaming. I was sitting on the shore of this river called my life.

I Will Sail My Vessel Til the River Runs Dry

I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry. Like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky. I'll never reach my destination If I never try, so I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry.

A destination is a fixed point, right? So, in one's lifetime, you would think that it would be easy to chart a course, navigate the waters, and, at some point, be thrilled to arrive at the place you had sought to find - ah...finally, my destination!

But, what if, as you are floating along, just focused on the day, not the lifetime, you see terrain that causes you to pause and take in your surroundings. And you say, " I like this moment." So you stop and you think that, hmmm, this could be the place. But is it your destination. Who knows for sure! You think that you could love this place, this person, these people, whatever it is that caused you to stop and smile.

And so you stay.

"Don't Put Off 'Til Tomorrow..."

Too many times we stand aside, and let the waters slip away. 'Til what we put off 'til tomorrow has now become today. So don't you sit upon the shoreline and say you're satisfied. Choose to chance the rapids And dare to dance the tide

But then it happens. That feeling. Something... someone is grabbing you by the collar and saying, "It's time to continue on your journey. You're not there yet!"

In the beginning, you struggle because you have become comfortable. Sitting on the shore has been quiet and safe. The days had developed a rhythm.

But something, someone is pulling you saying "Stand up. It's time to go." And you say, "But I'm afraid. I don't know what lies ahead." And something or someone reassures you saying, "Don't worry, fear is natural. But you can not let it stop you. It's time to move, time to grow again."

Expect Rough Waters

There's bound to be rough waters, and I know I'll take some falls. But with the good Lord as my captain, I can make it through them all.

You have done this so often now that you know there will be rough waters. That's part of the fear. Do you have the strength to do it all again? There will be strange faces, strange places. Simple things won't be simple for awhile.

But you also know that the feeling is temporary. You've been through this before. Strange places will become new favorite places to be, strange faces will become your new best friends, and simple things will, all too soon, become simple one more time.

You know this is all true and because of that, there is a sense of excitement that mixes with the fears.

Then you stand up, strong and sure, and you say "Alright, let the journey begin again!"

It's Not About the Destination. It's About the Journey!

I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry. Like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky. I'll never reach my destination, If I never try. So, I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry.

And so it's true, it's not about the destination. It's about the journey. Every place, every person, every moment along my path has given me the moments that have been my journey.

I see now that I will continue to stop, rest along a shore from time to time, but I have come to know also that, until I run out of river, my journey is not over. I must enjoy this time of rest, for tomorrow I may be traveling again! I understand now that my destination is just to follow the river!

Yes, I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry... 'til the river runs dry.

...You know a dream is like a river, ever changing as it flows. And a dreamer's just a vessel that must follow where it goes...
