What is an Aphorism?
An aphorism is described as a concise, terse, laconic, or memorable expression of a general truth or principle.
They are often handed down by tradition from generation to generation, coming directly from the experience of God-souls, or those who embody God. Sri Chinmoy has told us and others on several occasions, that his words come directly from his own inner experiences.
Spiritual writings, when one is familiar with them, are really not like that of an everyday spiritual teacher, as they are filled with inner experiences and indeed speak of an inner Authority which comes from the Self.
They have been handed down from time immemorial and are known by different names in different faiths. Psalms, beatitudes, slokas or sutras and even the original Haiku was written that way.

About Sri Chinmoy
Sri Chinmoy was born in the tiny village of Shakpura, East Bengal, on August 27th, 1931. He was the last of seven children, who were all highly spiritual, and his father had tremendous occult capacities.
The children all grew up in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, a spiritual Community and Sri Chinmoy went to live there himself, aged between 11 and 12, after his parents passed away.
Sri Chinmoy took part in normal activities at the Ashram: reading, sports, various tutoring, secretarial roles, etc., but his main interest was meditation, which he practiced sometimes up to 14 hours a day. This he continued for 20 years and which he described as rather unfolding the pages of a book he once knew.
He says that he was God-realized in a former life-time and remembered his realizations when he was about 13 years old. He was also blessed to come into a family which were highly evolved.
Sri Chinmoy came to New York on April 13th, 1964. He says that he obeyed an inner command to do so and this is described fully in my Magnum Opus, My Guru, Sri Chinmoy: Life and Teachings. (Available on Amazon)

Sri Chinmoy is one of the most versatile visionary-Seers that I have encountered and I have known of a few. His Path is the Path of the Heart … of Love, Devotion and Surrender to the Will of the Supreme.
This sweet simple way of loving obedience, devotion to an unconditional surrender to God, is paramount on the journey of God-realization.
He also teaches the philosophy of Self-transcendence … of going beyond, beyond, into the ever-transcending beyond. To him, God is not static, but in constant motion and there are no final levels of achievement, as spiritual evolution is an ongoing progress.
To that extent, he has excelled in weightlifting, music, sport, paintings and drawings, as well as literature and much more. It is said that Jalal Uddin Mohammed Rumi, a mystic poet whom I highly admire, wrote nearly 60,000 poems and is currently the most popular Persian mystic of the 16th century, here in the West.
Yet Sri Chinmoy wrote about three and a half times that many poems and nearly 1600 books prior to his passing on October 11th, 2007. He lived in America for 43 years and took Maha Samadhi –a Yogi’s conscious exit from this world, at 76-yrs old.
Sri Chinmoy taught that God descends in human form as an Avatar –a direct descent of God or God in human form to help mankind … that whenever the Avatar comes, there is usually a great shift in the earth consciousness, the evolution of mankind.
In his teachings, God-souls (Sat Guru’s) are very few and can be literally counted on the fingers in any one lifetime.
Sri Chinmoy has named about 7 Avatars, the Christ, Buddha and Sri Krishna, being among them. Avatars are rather like giant waves in an ocean which is also our essential core. The difference is only a matter of degree.
We are all made in the image of Spirit. Sri Chinmoy teaches that we are souls of the Absolute, are immortal and that reincarnation is necessary for the development and progress of the soul.
The goal of life is conscious, constant and ceaseless oneness with the Self or Source (God-realization). Prayer, both verbal and silent, self-giving as well as other forms of spiritual practices to include meditation, are necessary pre-requisites for spiritual progress.
