What is an Aphorism?

An aphorism is described as a concise, terse, laconic, or memorable expression of a general truth or principle.

They are often handed down by tradition from generation to generation, coming directly from the experience of God-souls, or those who embody God. Sri Chinmoy has told us and others on several occasions, that his words come directly from his own inner experiences.

Spiritual writings, when one is familiar with them, are really not like that of an everyday spiritual teacher, as they are filled with inner experiences and indeed speak of an inner Authority which comes from the Self.

They have been handed down from time immemorial and are known by different names in different faiths. Psalms, beatitudes, slokas or sutras and even the original Haiku was written that way.

Gems of Heaven

I am enclosing some aphorisms of Sri Chinmoy for the Heart and spiritual growth of the Seeker:

  1. “Be kind, be all sympathy,

For each and every human being,

Is forced to fight against himself.” – Sri Chinmoy

2.“It is an exceptional privilege,

To have the beauty of a serene mind,

The purity of a loving Heart

And the divinity of a humble life.” – Sri Chinmoy

3.“God descends from above,

To treasure my Heart and not my house.”- Sri Chinmoy

4.“My Lord does not ask me for my mind’s brilliance.

He only asks me for my Heart’s radiance.”- Sri Chinmoy.

5.“Love grows in the soul,

Glows in the Heart,

And finally flows, in the body.” – Sri Chinmoy.

6.“That which has to be rejected, we reject.

That which has to be transformed, we transform.

That which has to be transcended, we transcend.

In order to transcend, two things are necessary:

Personal effort and God’s Grace.” – Sri Chinmoy.

7.“The most beautiful thing on earth,

Is man’s gratitude to the Supreme, to God;

To the divinity in humanity. This is the beauty unparalleled,

And it will remain so throughout eternity,” – Sri Chinmoy.

8.“My Love of God, has no need of Heaven’s Bliss,

For my Love of God itself, is the highest Bliss.” – Sri Chinmoy.

9.“There is only one thing that is, was and ever shall be,

And that is Love. The Love that creates, the Love that nourishes

And the Love that sustains God’s universe.” – Sri Chinmoy.

10.“When peace is multiplied, Truth is multiplied.

When Truth is multiplied, Love is multiplied.

When Love is multiplied, God is multiplied.”- Sri Chinmoy.

11.“Try not to change the world, you will fail.

Try to Love the world. Lo! The world is changed, changed forever.” – Sri Chinmoy.

About Sri Chinmoy

Sri Chinmoy was born in the tiny village of Shakpura, East Bengal, on August 27th, 1931. He was the last of seven children, who were all highly spiritual, and his father had tremendous occult capacities.

The children all grew up in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, a spiritual Community and Sri Chinmoy went to live there himself, aged between 11 and 12, after his parents passed away.

Sri Chinmoy took part in normal activities at the Ashram: reading, sports, various tutoring, secretarial roles, etc., but his main interest was meditation, which he practiced sometimes up to 14 hours a day. This he continued for 20 years and which he described as rather unfolding the pages of a book he once knew.

He says that he was God-realized in a former life-time and remembered his realizations when he was about 13 years old. He was also blessed to come into a family which were highly evolved.

Sri Chinmoy came to New York on April 13th, 1964. He says that he obeyed an inner command to do so and this is described fully in my Magnum Opus, My Guru, Sri Chinmoy: Life and Teachings. (Available on Amazon)

Sri Chinmoy played over 100 instruments

gems-of-wisdom-fridays-inspiration-12-to

Sri Chinmoy is one of the most versatile visionary-Seers that I have encountered and I have known of a few. His Path is the Path of the Heart … of Love, Devotion and Surrender to the Will of the Supreme.

This sweet simple way of loving obedience, devotion to an unconditional surrender to God, is paramount on the journey of God-realization.

He also teaches the philosophy of Self-transcendence … of going beyond, beyond, into the ever-transcending beyond. To him, God is not static, but in constant motion and there are no final levels of achievement, as spiritual evolution is an ongoing progress.

To that extent, he has excelled in weightlifting, music, sport, paintings and drawings, as well as literature and much more. It is said that Jalal Uddin Mohammed Rumi, a mystic poet whom I highly admire, wrote nearly 60,000 poems and is currently the most popular Persian mystic of the 16th century, here in the West.

Yet Sri Chinmoy wrote about three and a half times that many poems and nearly 1600 books prior to his passing on October 11th, 2007. He lived in America for 43 years and took Maha Samadhi –a Yogi’s conscious exit from this world, at 76-yrs old.

gems-of-wisdom-fridays-inspiration-12-to

Sri Chinmoy taught that God descends in human form as an Avatar –a direct descent of God or God in human form to help mankind … that whenever the Avatar comes, there is usually a great shift in the earth consciousness, the evolution of mankind.

In his teachings, God-souls (Sat Guru’s) are very few and can be literally counted on the fingers in any one lifetime.

Sri Chinmoy has named about 7 Avatars, the Christ, Buddha and Sri Krishna, being among them. Avatars are rather like giant waves in an ocean which is also our essential core. The difference is only a matter of degree.

We are all made in the image of Spirit. Sri Chinmoy teaches that we are souls of the Absolute, are immortal and that reincarnation is necessary for the development and progress of the soul.

The goal of life is conscious, constant and ceaseless oneness with the Self or Source (God-realization). Prayer, both verbal and silent, self-giving as well as other forms of spiritual practices to include meditation, are necessary pre-requisites for spiritual progress.

Yes, I know. Sad for us all, as I have the same problem. I'll try to get this one on a niche site, though.

Mary and Rinita seemed to be able to comment on niche sites. Mary said something about going through notification and feeds. Didn't understand.

This is only my view, of course, but Sri Chinmoy to me, is one of the most powerful visionaries that's ever lived. I do believe that he is working in the American Consciousness. Indian teaching is that whenever an incarnation (Divine) comes, they speed up the evolution of mankind.

Sri Chinmoy has named 7. Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Christ, Chaitanya, Ramakrishna and Aurobindo. Guru teaches that God-souls will still come but less powerful, because humanity cannot take the Light of Spiritual Masters. We need it most, but reject it. So Earth is ungrateful. 'Nuff for now. Gratitude.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on November 05, 2020:

You often use quotes from Sri Chinmoy in your writings. It is wonderful to learn more about him and his background in this piece. It is getting harder to be able to leave comments on most of your posts, thus the revisit to this one.

manatita44 (author) from london on October 24, 2020:

Thank you Nithya, Higher blessings.

Nithya Venkat from Dubai on October 23, 2020:

Great aphorisms, each one rich with meaning. So much to learn from these gems, thank you for sharing.

manatita44 (author) from london on October 23, 2020:

Thank you, Peggy. I note some changes here. Yet I was able to write on your Article, though. Great beauty!

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on October 23, 2020:

I also missed seeing this in my feed. Among the many inspiring words from Sri Chinmoy's, I particularly liked this quote:

“World-peace can be achieved,

When the power of love,

Replaces the love of power.” – Sri Chinmoy.

Thanks for assembling this! Wishing you many blessings.

manatita44 (author) from london on July 14, 2020:

Indeed. Cannot be otherwise coming from God-souls. Much Love, Dee

Dora Weithers from The Caribbean on July 14, 2020:

Manatita, you know that I love quotes and Sri Chinmoy's are pungent with love and spirituality. Thanks for sharing.

manatita44 (author) from london on July 14, 2020:

Honour is good too. So important in the ancient traditions of the native Amricans, Indian Seers and ancient Chinese. We had it too at one point. We have forgotten, perhaps.

No, I was not speaking of this brutish sacrifice, but of course you know that. Again, we are in evolution, meaning there is constant motion. Francis use to walk up and down the road preaching. He would get hit by a bus now. Haha. Point is, things are useful in their time and hold meaning in their era.

One way of seeing life, is to see that nothing is outside God. All is within Spirit. This means that everything has a use or purpose. Darkness is merely a lesser form of Light and Covid -19 helps evolution. As we rise, so we perceive more and the universe becomes our friend. Peace, Bro.

Mr. Happy from Toronto, Canada on July 14, 2020:

"I trust that in your wise readings, which I appreciate, you are only taking the spirit of the thing said. It is not meant to be Revelations!" - "to a point."

Bruce Lee said: “You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.”

Some Spiritual people love talking about sacrifice.

Sacrifice: "The act of offering something to a deity in propitiation or homage, especially the ritual slaughter of an animal or a person.

n.

A victim offered in this way."

I just give thanks and I ask for help here and there. I do not "propitiate". I also do not slaughter any animals, including humans. So, basically: I do not sacrifice anything. Everything I do, I do willingly and happily. I "smile while I'm bleeding" too.

"We are asked to go against all that we hold to be dear and meaningful, and at first the mind revolts." - Yes. You are so on point here and I think that is one of the greatest paradoxes: we have to learn all these things, which eventually if we follow the Spiritual Red Road, we have to unlearn. Bloody life!! Haha!!

"Yet we have to teach it and we use the word 'meditation.'" - So, there is a way around it. Haha!! Can You tell I do not meditate now?

The way around it is through "gazing". My grandmother did it and many people have used this way for thousands of years. One can do it with stones, leafs ... a candle. Stare long enough and the Mind goes blank. Or, You fall asleep. Haha!! : )

"Life's perfection-road is very long, but the journey is richly rewarding." - Sri Chinmoy - Thank You. Very true.

All the very best!

P.S. I send cards with cash for books. That's how I managed to get Mr. Bill's memoir. To avoid Amazon and keep my honor. "My Honor is my Life" says a piece I wrote some years ago.

manatita44 (author) from london on July 14, 2020:

Lol.

I like you. We have to live in Rome and not do as the Romans do - to a point. To be in the world and yet not of the world. Whom are we trying to serve? God. Whose creation is it, including Amazon? God's. Yet I can give you a free manuscript, if you wish.

Spirituality is simple, true, yet it is the way of the cross. It is the Path of 'sweet' sacrifice. We are asked to go against all that we hold to be dear and meaningful, and at first the mind revolts. The sacrifice is not necessarily death. Mother's spend their lives sacrificing.

The fruit is also not Jesus or any Saviour, for that matter, but the Light that their selfless acts bring to the world. Here is an example. We use meditation as a blanket word, but few meditate. Meditation is silent, calm, stillness.

The mind is vacant, tranquil, like being at the bottom of the sea. On the surface there may be a multitude of waves, but the bed of the sea is all serenity, equipoise. Yet we have to teach it and we use the word 'meditation.' I trust that in your wise readings, which I appreciate, you are only taking the spirit of the thing said. It is not meant to be Revelations!

"Life's perfection-road is very long, but the journey is richly rewarding." - Sri Chinmoy

Mr. Happy from Toronto, Canada on July 14, 2020:

4.“My Lord does not ask me for my mind’s brilliance.

He only asks me for my Heart’s radiance.”- Sri Chinmoy. - This one reminded me of: "It is harder to be kind than clever." - I got this from Jeff Bezos' grandfather. Jeff Bezos never learned it, obviously. On the other hand, I'm trying. Haha!!

10.“When peace is multiplied, Truth is multiplied.

When Truth is multiplied, Love is multiplied.

When Love is multiplied, God is multiplied.”- Sri Chinmoy. - This one made me think of the "Man in Orange" (Sathya Sai Baba)

“Oh Bible, the Saviour has taken away my sins,

Will you not take away, my little, little worries, at least?”- Sri Chinmoy. - The tone of this made me think of Nietzsche's aphorisms in "The Gay Science". Brilliant book!

2.“Jesus was great. Greater was his mercy.

Greatest was His sacrifice.” – Sri Chinmoy. - Did Jesus ever call his crucifixion a "sacrifice"? Maybe but I certainly do not recall it.

"Prayer, both verbal and silent, self-giving as well as other forms of spiritual practices to include meditation, are necessary pre-requisites for spiritual progress." - A devotee of the Man in Orange once told me that He never prayed because he was the incarnation of "God" so, who would he pray to? I laughed at that answer. It was so very logical after he explained it.

Alrighty, thanks for sharing these thoughts. I would buy the book but I do not support greedy creatures as Jeff Bezos and his Amazon company. I do not mind giving You money but I will not give a penny to Jeff Bezos.

I'm pretty strict in that sense: no Facebook, no Amazon, no Wall-mart, no Disney ... no honor - no Mr. Happy LOL

Cheers!

Because it resonates in your spiritual Heart, Ji.

All is His Grace and we are His servants. Nimmita Mattram ... nimmita matram Bhava, savvyasachin.

I, am a mere instrument of His. He plays His flute and He Himself serves the banquet at His table of musical Lovers. We scold Him and he also scolds us, like the good Mother the child. Hari Om Tat Sat!!

Devatva Tripathi from LUCKNOW on July 12, 2020:

apart from a serious thing,

it is said in our belief that, once you fell into romance with Krishna you will forget everything.

don't know why but these lines made me relax that when there will be no one with me, i will have full permission to love God, cry in front of him, scold him, sleep inside him and any emotion of life i can express in front of him.

manatita44 (author) from london on July 12, 2020:

My Bhaia Ji.

I noticed you came twice. Asankhya Dhanywaad! Jai Sri Krishna! Jai Ram!

manatita44 (author) from london on July 12, 2020:

Yes, yes.

The Beloved is in all and IS all. You are wise.

That is why Saviours come and that is why they are humble. They see us as the same Ocean of Consciousness (Spirit). It is only a matter of degree. One is in Kindergarten and the other a Professor of the same Source or Absolute Supreme

Devatva Tripathi from LUCKNOW on July 12, 2020:

if you believe in god you automatically become fearless, when you become fearless it brings confidence, when there is confidence no one can stop you....and God lives in you , lives in love, music, flowers

manatita44 (author) from london on July 12, 2020:

Normal.

I know only so much, as I am growing. Spirituality is the way of the cross. Suffice it to say that we are exactly what our Christian scriptures say: We are made in the image of Spirit and as such we are mystical. We are not this body but the soul.

We do not know how to cope with Covid-19, as it is easier to look outside rather than in. So suddenly faced with fear, isolation, insecurity and thoughts of the afterlife, we ask ourselves if we are ready, which is all too much.

Yet only so many will change, as we cannot break the Dharma --the inner code of life. The order will always be as the Unmanifest wishes it to be. Hari Om!

Lorna Lamon on July 12, 2020:

Thank you for enlightening me Manatita - sometimes my thoughts which are often reflected in my poems confuse and trouble me.

manatita44 (author) from london on July 12, 2020:

Hi Lorna,

I'm speaking to Theresa below of what the Seers say and what is also my experience. That is to say, the closer we get to God, the more we suddenly become aware of things. Words can be a bit semantic anyway, so the important thing is to Love.

However, I found very quickly, that everything in the East has an equivalent in the West, They are approached by many as if they are different, but they really aren't. We might ridicule someone, for instance, for Japa and mantra, but that is exactly what we do when using the Rosary or saying the Jesus Prayer.

What the Saints call silent prayer is in fact meditation and what is Divine Marriage or Mystical Union to them, is Enlightenment or God-realisation in the East. The East is more systematic and there are many levels.

Avatars, Messiahs, Christs, Buddhas are the highest levels. They are not the physical forms, but the power manifested in the form, otherwise you and I would also be Buddhas. We are, but we are yet to be awakened. (Forgive me for using you and I as examples)

The Avatar comes directly from God to create transformation, like Christ or Krishna and so forth. Sri Chinmoy teaches that few recognize them and that Earth is ungrateful, as it is mostly still steeped in Ignorance.

Yet the Avatar is more than a human father, much, much more. He/she is God's Advocate in the human form and speeds up the evolution of humanity, like Christ did. I'm glad that you found the Hub. Sometimes I go to comments and click as Hubs can and do get lost.

I love your openness ... the willingness to allow many windows in your Heart, like Ruby does. It is a sign of inner growth. Peace.

Lorna Lamon on July 12, 2020:

Even though I follow you this particular article did not come through in my feed. However, it fills me with peace and hope. There is a gentle strength in the words of Sri Chinmoy which touches me. Although I have never heard of an Avatar, I sense that help born of compassion is near. Anupan is very deserving of this beautiful tribute.

manatita44 (author) from london on July 12, 2020:

Chuckle.

Give your Heart to the Divine and the whole Universe will work with you. That is how it works. One has to seek, knock and the Door will be opened.

Seeking or knocking is really the intense inner cry, the burning, yearning or longing for God. The child does something similar and mom comes running. The cry of the Heart needs to be much stronger. We must feel the need for inner meaning.

This becomes like a blooming and a flowering and attracts Grace. Suddenly you will be open to reading a lot of the Christian Saints, the Eastern mystics and a whole new world of Spirituality will open to you. It's here now, but spiritual seekers find it, only when they begin to question life and its purpose.

The spiritual Heart must be open and malleable. That is why prayer and selfless service, the act of what we in Christianity calls Charity, is so important. They both expand our nature and makes the Heart receptive to Grace. Much Love.
