The whole wide world has been through some really hard times lately, and we're all feeling a little worn off. For some of us, it seems as if all hope is gone, and we struggle to find our inner peace and motivation. Considering all we've been through so far, and considering the state of the world today, I believe that's completely okay.
But, as life must go on, it's important that we find our personal light in the darkness. Sometimes, all we need is someone to lift our spirits, and we'll be ready to fly again in no time. So, here's five memorable and inspirational quotes from some of the famous authors that helped me find sparks of light in my darkest hours.
"People aren’t born good or bad. Maybe they’re born with tendencies either way, but it's the way you live your life that matters."
— Cassandra Clare, City of Glass
As we've learned reading the Harry Potter series, We've all got both light and dark inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are, and It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow up to be.
That's exactly what Simon Lewis said to the main male protagonist of the Shadowhunters Chronicles. As Jace Herondale struggled with his own soul, Simon took it upon himself to remind his friend that things are not as strict as they often seem, and though our past might shape us in more than one way, the only way that matters is the way we live our lives today and tomorrow.
It was a great reminder to everyone reading the quote, and especially to the ones that suffered a great deal in the past. It's a quote made to give us comfort.
“If my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself.”
— Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief
How to describe Sally Jackson, the mother of the main protagonist of the series? There's only one word that comes to my mind: amazing!
After years of living with an abusive husband just to protect her son from things far worse than his stepfather, her son Percy asks her why didn't she ever accept his father's protection. Percy was convinced that this would make things easier for both of them. His mother shares with Percy a piece of her own wisdom. No matter how hard our life was or is, it's our own. And if it's going to mean something, we have to live it the best we can, without making anyone else do it for us.
In the end, no one can truly live our life instead of us, so if we want a real meaning, we have to live it.
“In this hour, I do not believe that any darkness will endure.”
— J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
While staring in the eyes of the final battle for the world they know and love, Éowyn, a shieldmaiden of Rohan, speaks with her future betrothed, Faramir, a steward of Gondor, and asks him if he thinks the world's going to die, as it's filled with evil and darkness. His response was sweet and honest, as Faramir himself often was.
‘No,’ said Faramir, looking into her face. ‘It was but a picture in the mind. I do not know what is happening. The reason of my waking mind tells me that great evil has befallen and we stand at the end of days. But my heart says nay; and all my limbs are light, and a hope and joy are come to me that no reason can deny. Éowyn, Éowyn, White Lady of Rohan, in this hour I do not believe that any darkness will endure!’ And he stooped and kissed her brow.
It's a great reminder for everyone around the world, especially in this pandemic we're currently living in. Darkness cannot beat the light, therefore, this too shall pass.
“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”
— George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones
At the beginning of the series, Jon Snow is a boy with a lot of issues, and an aching soul. His heritage, his background, the way his stepmother hates him, the way his own father looks the other way, the way everyone else is treating him and looking at him... No wonder young Jon became resentful and filled with anger. One day, he met no other than the infamous Tyrion Lannister, a man who was hated by society in the similar way that Jon was. For different reasons, maybe, but the point is still the same. That's when Tyrion offers young Jon a useful piece of advice.
And he is right. Society is always brutal towards the ones who're not uniformed and the same as everyone else. That's why we must all know who we are, accept ourselves as we are, and own it. If we accept and love ourselves, flaws and virtues included, others can't destroy us with that knowledge. Their words might still hurt from time to time, sure. But less and less every day, but only if we live in peace with ourselves despite all the odds, and despite all the words.
“It is possible to be in love with you just because of who you are.”
— Maggie Stiefvater, Shiver
This one is taken directly from an epic love fantasy saga, and it is, of course, a love quote. Nothing else can be expected from the book with the intro She loved all the wolves behind her house, but she loved one of them most of all. And this one loved her back.
Sam and Grace love each other in a way that can surpass time, space, and all obstacles. But, just like everyone else in the world, both Sam and Grace have issues. Sam is a werewolf who escaped the abusive home, and Grace is neglected by her parents and has low self-esteem. She doubts her own worth all the time, and the quote was said to her by Sam himself, who wanted to make her feel worthy of his love and worthy of love their friends feel for her. Because, despite the way she grew up, she was, indeed, worthy of everything.
Just like all of us are worthy of love, respect, and everything we ever wanted.
With that, the list of five inspirational quotes is finished. Of course, these are only some of the countless incredible quotes that can give us comfort, inspiration, and motivation.
Which quotes did you find most inspirational, and who was the author of the mentioned quotes? What would you add to this list?
