Do This One Thing To Be Happier

I think it's safe to say that most people want to be happy. The longing for happiness is universal. Some think it comes from having a stable career and family and for others it's from having a lot of money. It all depends on what your definition of happiness is. Most people are disappointed to find that happiness does not come in the package they expect. Once they get everything they ever wanted in their life, they come to see they are still not entirely happy. There's a missing piece that is never quite found. So what should you do if you fit into the category of people that are still searching for happiness, in whatever form it may come?

Happiness is like a butterfly, you can never really catch it when you try. Haven't you noticed that anything you chase in life tends to escape you? Only when you stop chasing it do you give it a chance to catch you. Much like the butterfly who sits on your shoulder after you've already given up on ever holding it. That's the thing that keeps most people from being truly happy; control. Some have the false idea that if they control every little aspect of their life, somehow that will bring true happiness in. Like somehow that is the key to it, trying to control every moment of every day. In reality, the opposite is usually true.

It's easy to be a control freak in today's hectic world. How else can you get everything done if you're not constantly on the go and making those do-lists that never seem to end? If you don't control everything, your life might just fall apart right? Yes and no. In order to be truly happy, you should have some control over your life of course. You can't just commit to chaos and expect to be happy. You should control the mundane everyday stuff like going to work, doing your best and being efficient there. There's also the routine things at home like household chores, cleaning, taking care of the kids if you have any, and other matters that need to be attended to. Controlling these things won't make you completely happy, but it'll give you some semblance of control over your life which is a good thing in this instance.

The things you need to let go of controlling are the bigger things in life like where you'll be in ten years, who you'll marry, and when the world is really going to end. If you look back at your life ten years ago, you're most likely not where you thought you would be now. That's the beauty of hindsight. Looking back at all your experiences, you know exactly why they had to happen. Everything always happens in the best way possible even if you can't see it at the moment. The good experiences teach us certain lessons, while the the bad ones push us to grow in a way we never thought possible. Timing is everything and only in hindsight do you realize exactly how the sequence of events was inevitable.

None of us are the people we thought we would be ten years ago and that's okay. Maybe we're better and maybe we're not, but the important thing is we're still learning everyday. A lot of people think getting married will bring them true happiness, like somehow that's the answer to all of their problems. But that's not true either. Having a loving partner is great, but it doesn't solve everything. You should never seek happiness in another person, no matter who it is. That is a recipe for disaster because if you ever lose that person you'll be right back where you started, sad and alone. The only way to be truly happy, is to be happy the way you are right now. Find happiness in yourself and keep that happiness no matter who enters or leaves your life. That way your happiness depends on you and not another person and that's something you can definitely control because you have control over yourself.

When the world is really going to end is a valid concern for many people. We are inhabitants of Earth and no matter what our religious beliefs may state, we know that one day the world is going to end whether it's because we will die or the earth will cease to exist. Either way, nothing is forever except what happens right now. The only thing that is important is how we live our lives while the world is still turning and there's still time to make changes. We can't control the world ending much like we can't control the weather. We can control how we react to our lives though and that's where our real power is.

Most people don't realize how much power they have over their lives because they never stop to think about it. Nothing is this world can do anything to you unless you give it the power. Anybody can say or do anything, but your reaction is where your power is. That's the part of life that you can really control and should control. Like Eleanor Roosevelt said: "no one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Learning the difference between what you should and shouldn't control is the line that separates happiness and unhappiness.

So what's a person to do in this crazy world? Control what you can and let go of the rest. Seriously. Go slow and steady towards your goals but don't over analyze or overthink anything. Everything will happen the way it's supposed to happen with your best interests in mind. Whether you believe in God or the Universe, realize that's it's all for your greatest good. The world is not against you and it never was. If anything is against you, it's the way you think about yourself. You might just be your worst enemy. You should let go of what you can't control and see where life brings you. You will be surprised at the amazing thing life has in store for you when you stop trying to force things to happen and just let them happen at their own time and in their own ways.

I believe that everything happens for a reason even if we don't know the exact reason right now. When you let go of a little control in your life, you let the Universe work it's magic and push what you need into your life. You ever notice how you might want something so bad but it just doesn't happen? You try and force something into your life that has no place in it, and it just doesn't work? That's the Universe's way of saying that thing or person is not meant for you. You will never have to force anything that's meant to happen into your life, it'll effortlessly flow in without any work on your end. That's what happens when you let go a little and open yourself up to new experiences.

So all in all, control the little things in life, but let go of the rest to be truly happy. You'll know right away that you're heading in the right direction because the world will seem lighter because you're no longer carrying it's weight on your shoulders. You'll be more open to new experiences because you're no longer stuck in your comfort zone which gives a false sense of security. Your world will completely change when you no longer have to wander how things will all turn out. The Universe is for you not against you, so everything that happens will always be for your greater good and in your best interests to help you learn and grow. That's all this life is, a constant stream of lessons that we have to pass in order to progress to the next one. By letting go of a little control and seeing where life leads you, you're giving the Universe a chance to work a little magic into your life. And that's the thing about magic, it only manifests if you're open to it.

Are you happy with your life?
