In a life that mostly revolves around social media, its very easy to feel lost and engulfed by negativity. Being subjected to negativity on a regular basis can have devastating effects on one's health. It's no wonder that a majority of the modern world populous suffers from depression and anxiety issues. In the current era, having a sound mind is just as important as having a healthy body for better overall health. There are various exercises that one can do for maintaining a healthy body, from cardios to high intensity training to yoga. But is there any exercise that we can to do prevent ourselves from falling into the traps of negativity? Yes! There certainly are a lot many things we can do to improve our mental health and lead a happier life.
Skip social media for a while!
I know its very difficult to keep away from the continuous news feed from everyone you might have ever came across. But its very important to keep ourselves sane. Whenever we log into a social media account we see zillions of people doing millions of different things and we helplessly end up comparing our current situation with theirs. What we fail to realize in situations like these that everyone has their fair share of trouble and each one have gone through a different kind of hell, that we have no idea about, to be where they are today. Just because someone has a life that's better than ours doesn't mean we should ruin our present situation by being negative or jealous. The best thing to do in such a situation is to skip our social media for a while. Yeah, it won't change our news feed but it will help us by providing us time spent otherwise on social media. We can use to these hours now to improve our skills and better ourselves, and in turn eventually our lives. And then go back on social media flooding it with our new found positive attitude! I was in depression when I gave myself a break from social media for the first time, it really helped me to recover faster and made me feel better about myself. In times when we have doubts about ourselves, trust me, the best thing to do is to be alone and introspect what we want from our lives? What is that would make our lives meaningful? And the answer to these questions shouldn't involve others perceptions or thoughts about us! It should just be exclusively about us. Reason being simple, we give what we have, and we get what we give! If we are filled with doubts and negativity, we give off doubts and negativity to the universe, if we are filled with happiness and love we give away happiness and love to the universe. When we give doubts and negativity we get doubt and negativity but when we give love and happiness we get the same given back to us!
Cut out everyone and anyone who brings negativity in your life.
I know it sounds very harsh but it helps in more ways than one, by not only limiting negativity in your life but also keeping ourselves happy and positive for a longer time. Most of the time we don't realize but a lot of negativity that enters our lives, comes from negative mindset people. I have faced a similar situation where a few of my friends constantly debilitated my achievements and criticized my every move. It felt wrong to stop talking to them but then the continuous negativity that they flooded in my life was more than what I could take. It was hard for me to end my friendship with them but after a few months of doing it, I realized it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was more at peace with myself and my surroundings. My faith in myself got restored, I was more determined to work towards my success. So, you see, every cloud has a silver lining. Try to avoid negative mindset people as much as you can and you'll see that your life starts changing like a dream.
Get some self help!
Read some books on self help. I know a lot many people are very apprehensive about self help books but reading self help books really restores our faith in us. One such book that I found very helpful is, The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz. It really helped me to become less judgmental and a lot more understanding. It has been a life changing book in my life. It talks about how we ruin our relationship with other by associating with them certain expectations that are difficult for them to fulfill, how love something for what it is and not for what we think it is, how to be the reason behind our own happiness, etc. Its not even a very thick book. But the ideas it contains are revolutionary. It has made me a better person and I'm pretty sure, it will help you with your life and relationships too.
Find a Purpose.
Everyone who's born in this world, is born with a purpose. Its necessary for us to figure out our purpose. Having a purpose gets us in synchronization with the rest of the universe. As simple as it sounds, its as much effective in dealing with negativity. Once, we have a purpose that we like to work for, it becomes easier for us to focus our mind on that particular task and keep ourselves busy and away from all the negative energies. An old saying, "Empty mind is a devil's workshop", holds true in such cases. When we have nothing to focus or work on, our mind wanders and since its easy to get attracted towards negativity, we easily lose ourselves to pessimistic thoughts. By working on a task or by staying focused we can prevent our mind from wandering, hence, making ourselves less prone to negativity. Also, when we work on something that we love, our brain releases hormones that make us feel better and happier. So, try finding a purpose and work on it. If you find it difficult to do, I recommend you to read, Success Principles by Jack Canfield. He give practical advises in an easy to read language. Also, the book is filled with numerous pictures so you won't feel worn out while reading. It is one of the best books out there on self help. It helped in restoring my lost faith in myself. I can say this with complete confidence it will help you in a zillion ways if you decide to give it a try! Trust me, you'll love it!
Lastly, I want to talk about the most important tip on dealing with negativity: Meditation. Meditation has not only been advocated by spiritual guru but now a days doctors also recommend it just as much. Recent studies and researches have shown that our brain goes through significant changes when we meditate on a regular basis. There have also been claims on doubling of grey matter presence on the neurons or brain cells, after just two months of regular meditation. Meditation relaxes our mind and helps improve our focus. It is also known to make our minds shaper as it increases the grey matter present in our brain. I know for some people meditation can be a little taxing and annoying as it does not provide immediate results. But there's nothing else out there to help our minds clam down as beautifully as meditation does. If you don't feel like taking up meditation for a long time, just do it as a 60 days challenge. If you don't feel like continuing, give it up after that. But for once just try! I can assure you that you won't feel like giving it up later! And you'll definitely enjoy doing it, once you get a hang of it.
