Why It's Wise to Have an Accountability Partner.
When Michaela and Jackson first got their braces put on, the orthodontist gave them a long list of things they could no longer eat; Gummy Bears, marshmallows, hard Tortilla chips, chewing gum, nuts (of any kind), Jolly Ranchers, popcorn even. There was quite a lot that they could no longer eat. Michaela said to me, “Mom, if you see me wanting to buy candy with my allowance money, will you tell me ‘no’?” She wanted me to be her Accountability Partner, her safe person, the person who would help “call her on her things”. It was not that she did not have the ability to not buy candy; but, she knew that if someone was going to take the initiative to watch her spending habits that closely, the temptation to buy candy would be less.
A few years back, I worked through the 21-Day Daniel Fast. I was right at the start of a God-call to ministry and I felt I needed to really dive in at the deepest level. For me, it was not so much about sink or swim; but, well, I wanted to know I could swim without sinking. I asked Mark to help me watch what I bought at the grocery store and to help keep me from the meats and sweets that the family would nosh on while I ate more vegetarian/vegan. I asked Mark to be my Accountability Partner, my safe person, the person who would help “call me on my things”. It was not that I did not have the ability to not eat meats and sweets; but, I knew that Mark would take the initiative to watch my noshing that closely, ergo the temptation to eat something that was not allowed during this twenty-one days would be less.
Sometimes, we all need that Accountability Partner, that safe person, that person who will help “call us on our stuff”. This person will be able to hold you accountable, especially in those areas of your life where you struggle the most; drugs, alcohol, food, swearing, smoking, lying, cheating, et cetera … whatever you may or may not need help with when trying to steer clear of temptations. Your Accountability Partner could be a spouse, a parent, a pastor, a teacher, a coach, a friend. Talk with this person whom you choose and pray with this person that their help will be help as you need.
