A Tale About Mother and Baby

Miranda was a work-at-home mom. One day she thought that as soon as she finished feeding her one-year-old boy, she would try to work online, putting her baby to sleep. Her baby, Jonathan, by name, could crawl and walk unsteadily around the house. Her hubby was away at work.

Accordingly, she put the feeder into the mouth of the baby, and he gulped it inside, relishing it. Soon, he was fast asleep.

She could clean around the house later. More importantly, she had a bunch of baby clothes to wash. So, she thought she would attend to it first before sitting with her laptop. She put a few baby clothes inside the washing machine, went inside the baby's room to get more of his worn clothes, and put them also inside the washing machine. She put a mild detergent into the machine and switched it on.

She passed the baby’s room to get into the office room to work. But something looked odd in the glimpse of the eye. So, she returned to the baby’s room, but he wasn’t inside the cot.

She started searching around the apartment.

“Come on, Miranda, think. You will have to work this out”, she said to herself.

Calling her husband would be a waste of time. Then, something made her look at the washing machine, which was placed outside the restroom, next to a basin. She went closer. She thought she saw a face and a limb. She was horrified.

Miranda had switched off the washing machine several times before to insert more clothes. So, right now, she knew exactly how to switch off the washing machine and unlock its door. Quickly, she looked through the clothes, after unlocking the door, and her hands caught hold of the baby.

Her heart skipped two beats. The baby was quiet. He seemed unhurt but unconscious. She wondered how he went inside the machine. She realized he must have slipped off unnoticed when she was busy gathering more of his worn clothes in his room.

Miranda knew the water had to be out of Jonathan's little body. She couldn’t bear the thought of her baby dying.

She had a handful of numbers for the ambulance. And by a stroke of good luck, she and her family lived close to a hospital.

Quickly, she dialed the number of the ambulance. Shortly, the ambulance arrived. The men came with a wide stretcher. But first, they looked at the baby. One of them tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for the baby. Eventually, water came out of the baby's body. After the next dose of rescue breathing, the baby ejected more water from his mouth. Immediately, he opened his eyes and started crying.

Miranda was so relieved that her baby was back to life, but now she wanted to know if all the bones of Jonathan were okay. So, one of the first-aid men with the ambulance advised Miranda to take him soon to the renowned hospital nearby in their ambulance.

Miranda wasted no time and was ready in ten minutes to carry her baby to the hospital.

Doctors and nurses at the hospital made a thorough checkup of the baby and found him to be okay. No broken bones and no injuries.

Miranda was relieved and took the Uber, carrying Jonathan, toward her home. She let the baby relax to sleep in her lap. And then, Miranda called her hubby to let him know all that happened. She now didn’t know how to prevent it from happening again.

“We will find a way, Miranda. I am sorry you had a hectic morning, but I am glad to know Jonathan is okay. Let me come home. We will find a way to keep it from happening again, promise Miranda.”

“Love you, darling”, Miranda said. “Love you, too. Bye for now”, came down her hubby’s voice.

In the late evening, Miranda's hubby, Cameron came home. He heard the story of mother and baby that occurred earlier in the day from Miranda again. And then he hit upon an idea.

"How about shifting the washing machine to the storeroom where there are only cupboards for towels, wipes, diapers, and handwash bottles? There is ample space opposite the cupboards where the washing machine and the dryer could fit in. More importantly, the door to the storeroom requires extra effort to open so that Jonathan can never open it easily”, said Cameron.

“I agree,” said Miranda. “But I wouldn’t like water draining on the floor from the washing machine. Make sure you contact a good serviceman skilled in this expertise.”

“Yes, I will immediately look up online”, replied Cameron.

After having dinner, Cameron sat down with his laptop to look for washing machine servicemen. He browsed several sites and finally found Hitachi washing machine service, Hitachi being the same brand as their washing machine and dryer. After several connecting calls and a web live chat, he finally fixed everything at a reasonable price.

The following Saturday, when Cameron would be home, the servicemen would come and help the family to make the shift.

Miranda was happy and drew her precious baby, Jonathan, closer to her heart.
