When You Wish Upon a Star: A Story About Pursuing Your Dreams

Updated on October 3, 2017

Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal."

What Is Your Dream?

Do you have a dream? Is there something inside you that won't let you rest? Is there something you have always wanted to do since you were a child? Is there something you have discovered recently that you are passionate about and want to pursue?

Sometimes our dreams consume us, but at the same time we can all too easily give up because it seems like a star that is too far out of reach. The story you are about to read is the story behind my profile picture: When You Wish Upon A Star. It is a story written to encourage, to bring hope and purpose to your life, and most importantly to create faith in oneself. I hope you enjoy reading it, and I hope it challenges you to pursue your dreams.... whatever they may be.

When You Wish Upon A Star
When You Wish Upon A Star

Once Upon A Time...

Once upon a time there was a little girl who loved to dream. She would wish upon stars and dream of the future. She would imagine great happiness and seek after new hope. In fact, the little girl spent most of her days wishing and dreaming and hoping for things that would make her life a little less ordinary.

The more she dreamed, the better she felt. And the better she felt the more she dreamed. Days, weeks and months passed. The little girl continued to wish on stars and wait for the moment when one day, her dreams would come true.

However, the little girl was so pre-occupied with her dreaming, that opportunities passed her by like clouds on the horizon.

One evening when the sky was twinkling with little stars, she noticed something floating by her. It was a little boy clutching desperately to a rope, which was attached to a sparkling star. The little girl stared in amazement before calling out desperately to the boy.

“Are you alright?”

The little boy smiled back whilst clutching onto the rope for dear life.

“What are you doing?” the little girl exclaimed in wonderment.

“I am catching my wishing star”, he replied. “I am going to make my wishes come true.”

The boy surely and steadily began climbing up the rope towards his star, as he continued to pass by the little girl.

The little girl looked up in the sky at all the stars she had ever wished on. There were millions and millions of them, each one twinkling so brightly. Not one of those stars had ever fallen into her lap. Not one of her wishes had ever come true.

This time she looked to a new star and made a new wish. She picked up a rope and with all her might threw it up into the sky. It wrapped itself around her chosen star and she grabbed onto it for dear life.

The little girl’s life was about to change, and change for the better, as she had finally found her ideal.

My Dream

As a child, I would wish on stars, flower petals, and wishing wells, and although I did not really know if any of my dreams would ever come true, they still made me happy because they were my dreams. They were unique to me and me alone. Something inside myself made me desire these things, and dream of them coming true. In a sense they were my ideals for my life. And some of these ideals and dreams I still hold to today.

My dream now is still somewhat of a childhood one, in that as a child, I I loved drawing and writing and wanted to have a job that involved both. Now I am on my way to pursuing a career as a children's book writer and illustrator. It is a dream that requires hard work, persistence and the ability to not let discouragement and rejection get me down. I, like the little girl in my story, have to grab my star and not let it go. Easier said than done. But then that's what pursuing your dreams are all about. Faith, hope and persistence.

A beautiful inspiring story. I started writing stories when I was ten years old and read them to my friends. As I matured, I realized that my mother wanted me to have a good paying job first and then pursue my story writing. I've been writing short stories ever since then.

Delightful hub, Little Light, very inspirational. When I was 8 I began ballet lessons. I loved them and looked forward to my weekly lesson. Eight years passed and at age 16 I dreamed of having my own dance studio. It took many more decades following that before I, at age 40, actually did get my dance studio and had my dream come true. I'm a firm believer of: It's never too late.

Les Brown used to speak at a church I had attended in Michigan. He is a wonderful motivational speaker and his story is also an inspiration.

Well done. Thanks for sharing and have voted it up.

The last sentence of this hub including the last few words "..Faith, hope and persistence.." are by themselves very inspirational. Ask any successful person and they will tell you that whatever they've accomplished so far has always started with a dream. That dream would later have been topped up with a lot of faith, hope, hard work and persistence, like you rightly mentioned. Your choice of quotes make for an inspirational read!

Well put. We can wish away our lives waiting for things to fall into our laps, but they seldom do. Some people have that kind of luck; most of us do not.

(I once knew a lady who lucked out like that all the time..she was once at a party, and in just 'mingling' and having fun, lucked into a dream job of lounge pianist on a cruise ship; another time, bought a musical instrument for $20 at a garage sale, that turned out to be an extremely valuable antique.)

But, those are the exceptions...most of us have to work hard at our dreams, for dreams are merely the idea--the starting point. We must implement our own ideas to bring them to fruition.

What a great way to start my morning. The little girl's insight that a star had never fallen into her lap was worded particularly well. Thank you, Ms. Little Light. Voted up, useful and beautiful.
