A Short Story

They danced, it didn't matter that it had been twenty-five years since they first danced together, once he took her in his arms it felt like the first time all over again. He was dashing in his suit, and although earlier she was feeling self-conscious in her clothing, the minute they began to dance she felt beautiful again.

He swung her around swiftly leading the dance, and she thought of their first dance again. She had been only eighteen while he was twenty one and very intimidating to her young eyes. She had been at a festival, and the big dance at the end was supposed to be the thing to be at that year. She had been so nervous, spending hours getting ready and having her best friend do her hair. She did not have a date to the dance and was planning on going stag, but that was fashionable among her friends and she wouldn't really be travelling alone so she didn't care. In fact all she had cared about at the time was a boy from school. She had known him all her life, but just recently she thought he'd finally shown an interest in her, and he had asked her if she was going to be at the dance. She thought this was going to be the night that he finally confessed his love to her. Instead, he had ended up asking her best friend to dance, leaving her sitting depressed and alone at the table, while her other friends all danced as well. Just as she was about to leave, another man came up to the table and asked her if she would dance with him. She looked up shocked by how handsome he was and agreed, at first just thinking of getting back at her friend. However, when he took her in his arms and they began to dance, it was like time had stopped for everyone but them. They danced in silence, as if both were adjusting to the feel of the other, and when the song ended she was amazed to see that her hands were shaking.

"My name is Adam." he said, and suddenly all thoughts of her high school crush was wiped from her thoughts replaced with a thousand thoughts of Adam. They spent the rest of the night getting to know one another, and had a very fast courtship, which turned into a forty-seven year marriage.

Here they were again dancing, and she felt that same shaky sensation through her body, even after all this time. Adam smiled down at her, and she smiled back suddenly feeling shy as if this was their first time meeting. When the song ended he guided her over to a table, and like the first night they met, they talked through the evening getting to know each other all over again.
