I saw him across the lunchroom

holding a superman lunchbox,

wearing a Looney Toons T-shirt

and yellow striped tube sox.

He was the boy of my dreams,

sitting three tables away.

All alone, eating cheese puffs.

Today was my lucky day.

I scribbled a note on my napkin

and tossed it to his table.

It said: Will you be my boyfriend?

My name is Mabel.

He looked up and smiled

his teeth stained with cheese.

I smiled back at him,

while swallowing my peas.

He followed me to dump my tray.

He said, "Hi, my name is Sam".

I wiped the sweat off my palm

and reached out for his hand.

We walked out to recess

and played on the slide

until the bell rang

for us to go back inside.

Daydreaming in class

Sam was on my mind

I had fallen in love

but only the puppy kind.
