New to the science fiction scene. I plan to publish a few short stories and eventually turn one of them into a novel with your help!

I am hoping to receive some feedback on this style of writing. I was afraid writing a short story as a compilation of police reports might be a bit boring. I have never seen this done before and wanted to experiment with it. Hope you enjoy!

Case #37584

Thursday, November 8th, 2018 at approximately 0730hrs

I, Deputy Johnson of the Janford County Sheriff’s Department, responded to call in the woods to the north of 413 Ames Street in Southacre. Upon my arrival I spoke with Johnathon Hawkins.

(Witness) Johnathon T. Hawkins

DOB 13 November 1960

619 LaFayette Avenue, Southacre 58293

Hawkins wished to file an informational report on an incident he had while hunting. According to Hawkins he was hunting in the woods north of Southacre at approximately 0500hrs. He stated that he observed a deer within a few minutes of setting up in his tree stand and took a shot striking the deer. Hawkins advised that the deer began to run to the east. Hawkins explained that he observed the deer from about 30 meters away when he noticed it began to “tremble”.

Hawkins stated that he felt the deer was dying, however, this deer began to “tremble” in a way he had never seen an animal die before. Hawkins related that he was an experienced hunter and had killed many animals in the past. Hawkins appeared distraught and uncomfortable to describe more. When I questioned him further he stated that he “wasn’t crazy”, and that he knows what he saw.

Hawkins advised that the trembling turned into “tearing”. He stated that the animal began screaming as it began to swell and tear around the stomach area. Hawkins stated that he wasn’t sure what to do so he fired a another shot into the animal. Hawkins stated that he then observed the deer burst open at the belly.

Hawkins again became distraught and advised me again that he was telling the truth.

He continued to state that what happened next baffled him. He advised that a “figure” began to crawl out of the corpse of the deer. When pressed to describe the figure Hawkins could only say that there still wasn’t much light, but the figure appeared to be “glittery”. Hawkins stated that he fired a third shot into the air because he “feared for his life”. When I questioned him further as to why he feared for his life he stated that he just felt scared. I inquired to what the “figure” did and Hawkins stated “well, nothing, he just calmly walked away”. I advised Hawkins to tell me why he thought the figure was a “he”, and he stated that he wasn’t sure what it was.

Hawkins had nothing further to add to the story, however, became irate when I asked if we could store his gun for a few days until he calmed down.

I am requesting this report be forwarded to local mental health to do a follow up with Mr Hawkins. This report is also an informational report and requires no further investigation.

Case #37621

November 8th, 2018 at 1917hrs

On the above date and time I, Deputy Stevens of the Janford County Sheriff’s Office, was called to 22 Benton Rd in Southacre. I was advised that a Mr Hodge found his wife Mrs Hodge dead in the back yard. I arrived at the above date and time and spoke with Mr Hodge.

(Wtiness) Dale Hodge

DOB 22 March 1947

22 Benton Rd, Southacre 58293

(Victim) Reyna Hodge

DOB 17 May 1952

22 Benton March 1947

Hodge stated that his wife has had dementia for the last few years. Hodge also advised that sometimes she would begin to wander off and get lost. I would note that our dispatch shows over 12 calls in the last few years for Mrs. Hodge being missing and found.

Hodge continued stating that he came home from work when he noticed he was unable to find Mrs Hodge. He began to look around the house and eventually noticed her in the backyard garden slumped over. Hodge stated that he turned on the back porch light and observed that his wife was sitting, but leaned forward over her lap with her back “torn” open as if it ripped apart. Hodge was very upset and began to cry while he explained the story.

I walked to the back yard with Hodge and observed Mrs Hodge slumped over just as Hodge described. I called for a detective unit while securing the scene. I was later asked by the detective unit to take photographs of the scene. I have entered the photos into evidence locker 97 with proper chain of custody.

Mrs Hodge’s back was completely removed as if opened a full 180 degrees. The spine appeared to be snapped to the side and several organs had come out laying to the side of the body. Throughout the surrounding blood there appeared to be a shiny material such as glass or colored glass (depending on the angle of the flashlight).

I would note that Mr Hodge is approximately 70 years old and walks with a cane.

I would also note that Deputy Johnson advised me that he had a Related Case #37584 on file. I am requesting this report be forwarded to the detective branch for further follow up.

Supplemental Report #7 to Case #37621

Possible Related Case #37584

November 8th, 2018 at 1937hrs

I, Detective Kenison of the Janford County Investigations Unit, responded to dead body call at 22 Benton Rd Southacre. Upon my arrival I met with Officer Stevens who secured the initial scene.

I observed, potential victim, Reyna Hodge who appeared to have her back split completely open. I reinterviewed Mr Hodge. Mr Hodge’s statements were consistent with the statements given to Officer Stevens.

I observed a trail of blood moving away from Reyna Hodge which appeared to me as if someone walked through the scene. I however did not observe any type of foot print and the blood did not appear to be disturbed. The laceration in Hodge’s back did not look to be done by a cutting instrument. The skin on the back was frayed in several places and covered with a shiny glittery material.

There will be several other supplemental reports attached by other officers on scene.

Evidence was collected to include, a sample of a blood with some type of shiny glittery substance, photographs, and all clothing worn by Reyna Hodge. Evidence was placed into locker 102.

The Coroner on the above date at 2347hrs responded. The body will be transported to United Health Hospital in Raybush for an autopsy.

Supplemental Report #13 to Case #37621

November 11th at 0800hrs I, Detective Kenison, arrived at United Health Hospital to witness the autopsy of Reyna Hodge. I observed the autopsy and spoke with Dr. Charlotte Walters.

(Witness) Dr Charlotte Walters

DOB Jan 15th, 1970

United Health Hospital

Dr Walters stated during the autopsy that she had never seen a body ripped in such a way. She stated that the cause of death was indeed from the tear in the back and the massive blood loss. Dr Walters further asked if I knew what the shiny particles attached to the body were. I advised that I didn’t know. Dr Walters suggested perhaps a chemical agent of some kind was somehow used and that samples would be forwarded to the lab.

During the autopsy several individuals entered the autopsy room. I was greeted by Dr Alan Deng who advised that he was interested in the case.

(Witness) Dr Alan Deng

DOB Jan 1 1951

Department of Energy, Washington D.C.

I asked as to why Dr Deng would be interested in a potential local homicide. Deng stated that he felt that this wasn’t a homicide and that the victim most likely had some sort of disease. Deng stated he thought it was possible that the victim suffered from “butterfly disease” or Nephrotic syndrome. Deng did however state that he was interested in the glittery substance attached to the victim’s body. Dr Deng stated that the substance could be stolen from their labs and that due to the nature of the department’s work the substance should be tested by them. Deng advised that his investigators would take over the case and the evidence. I inquired as to what the substance could be and if any of the deputies on the case could be contaminated. Deng stated to not worry as the substance would not be toxic or cause harm. Deng further stated that the Sheriff of Janford County was advised that they were taking over the case.

I spoke with Sheriff Baxter by phone and confirmed the same statement Deng made above. I was advised to terminate any follow up investigations and to assist only if Dr Deng asked.

Supplemental Report #14 to Case #37621

November 18th at 1122hrs I attempted to contact Mr Hawkins.

(Witness) Johnathon T. Hawkins

DOB 13 November 1960

619 LaFayette Avenue, Southacre 58293

I attempted to contact Hawkins in reference to the substance he had found on the deer. His description appeared to be similar in nature to the substance found on Reyna Hodge. Upon my arrival to his address I was notified by an unknown neighbor that Mr Hawkins had checked in voluntarily to the local mental health office.

On the above date at 1313hrs I arrived at the County Mental Health department to speak with Mr Hawkins. Hawkins appeared to be terrified upon my presence. I tried to speak to him several times, but he refused to cooperate.

Nothing Follows.

Private Detective Ray Faler of Absolute Investigations, Swynwynne City Branch

Client: James Kenison ex detective for Janford County Investigations Unit

Kenison File Initial Report: 1

January 17th, 2019

Mr Kenison hired our services in an attempt to follow up on a case that he said shouldn’t have been closed and that the case was responsible for him being fired from the Janford County Sheriff’s Office.

Kenison told me that he was working on a case that he was told to stop investigating. Kenison reported to me that he did one extra follow up investigation and shortly after was detained in a routine traffic stop in which another officer discovered open alcohol in his car. Kenison remains adamant that he did not have alcohol in the car. He also told me that he does not drink because of the medication he takes for his heart condition. Kenison explained that he was told to resign or face criminal charges. Kenison stated that he initially resisted until an evidence report came back, within only 24 hours, stating that his fingerprints were on the open container of alcohol. Kenison stated he had been framed and was forced to resign.

Kenison wishes for Absolute Investigations to assist in following up on Janford County’s case # 37621. He specifically stated that he would like us to speak with Dr. Charlotte Walters and a Mr. Hawkins. Kenison also advised that there may be new reports related to the case. Kenison provided Absolute Investigations with a copy of case # 37621 and all supplemental reports that he obtained before his resignation with the department.

Kenison File Report: 2

January 19th, 2019

I met with Dr. Charlotte Walters at United Health Hospital. Dr. Walters told me that she remembered Detective Kenison. Dr. Walters related to me that the whole incident was “strange” because a federal agency and a Dr. Deng wished to have all the evidence. Dr. Walters laughed at the fact that Dr. Deng tried to suggest that the death was from some “obscure” disease. Dr. Walters firmly told me that she would not be allowed to go into detail on the autopsy she performed due to state law, however, that the incident was very strange and unlike anything she has seen in her career.

Kenison File Report: 3

January 20th, 2019

I met with Johnathon Hawkins. He told me he remembered Detective Kenison and referred to him as a “good guy” who was just trying to do his job. Hawkins explained that after he filed his initial report he was evaluated for a mental health risk but was CLEARED from the local County Mental Health Department. Hawkins stated that about a week after he was approached by a group of individuals that “coached” him into what to say regarding his report. Hawkins told me that he was defiant towards the individuals. Hawkins stated that the next day he was reevaluated by the County Mental Health department and forced to go to “floor 3” at the psychiatric ward. Hawkins stated that floor 3 is where they keep people with mental issues. Hawkins also told me that he only had to remain there for 20 days. Hawkins remembered the 2nd meeting with Detective Kenison and told me that at that time he thought Kenison was working to keep him quiet or was testing him to see if he would still talk. Hawkins believes that Detective Kenison was trying to help him. Hawkins told me he would take me to the location if I wanted to see where the incident happened.

I drove Hawkins to a patch of woods north of the town of Southacre. Hawkins showed me the exact location where he shot the deer. I noticed about 5 x 5 meter plot cut out of the ground that went about 1 meter deep. Hawkins relayed to me that he was not the one to dig into the ground. Hawkins pointed into the northeast and told me that this was the direction the “glitter man” walked to after it crawled out of the deer’s corpse.

We began walking in that direction when within about 30 meters we both observed a shiny fluid that appeared to have particles like glitter or glass in it. The particles would change color depending on what angle you looked at it. I collected several samples of it.

Samples were dropped off to Dr. Leeroy Edmond and Shelly Rand of Water Lake Labs immediately after my meeting with Hawkins.

Kenison File Report: 4

March 13th, 2019

James Kenison has prepaid for over 100 of work. Kenison told me that he felt he was being followed or at least observed. Kenison also provided me with several news reports with various events in the area that seemed “strange” to him. Some mentioned an odd substance found during these incidents.

I also have received notice from Dr. Leeroy Edmond and Shelly Rand that they had “interesting” results and thought I was playing a hoax on them. I will be speaking with them shortly.

Kenison File Report: 5

March 17th, 2019

I have read the obituary of Johnathon Hawkins. The newspaper stated that he committed suicide. I also read a police blotter that Hawkins died in a failed mugging attempt and that they had no leads. I contacted the Sheriff’s Office posing as a reporter under a different name and they confirmed that the death was from a failed robbery attempt.

I then contacted Southacre News and a representative of the paper stated that the police advised them it was a suicide initially.

Kenison File Report: 6

March 18th, 2019

I have met with Shelly Rand from Water Lake Labs. Shelly asked me several times if this was some joke or hoax to mess with them. Shelly explained 2 things that bothered her: 1) that the samples delivered to her by me contained a radioactive material Astatine that would have to be man made because there is almost none of the material on Earth 2) that the sample was most likely somewhat “fresh” because of the short half-life that it would have before changing into another isotope.

Shelly said that Dr. Edmond was not in the lab because the significance of the sample was so profound that he needed advice outside the lab, and that he would most likely be in Washington D.C. for the next week.

Shelly also stated that I should see a doctor due to possible contamination from radiation. Shelly stated that the amount was low enough and the dose shouldn’t cause me harm unless I was around the material for extended periods.

Kenison File Report: 7

March 20th, 2019

I received a phone call from Dr. Edmond. Dr. Edmond told me that what I found was “absolutely profound” and that he wanted to know if I could travel to D.C. to meet with him and speak with some colleagues about the sample. He asked me for the whole story behind the sample. Dr. Edmond also told me that he would finance the entire trip. I advised him that it would be better told in person than by phone and that I would meet him in the next few days.

On the same day I received a hand written letter from someone claiming to be James Kenison. I checked the hand writing with past notes that Kenison has given me and I concur that the note was indeed from Kenison. The note is as follows:

Ray, I am picking up too much heat these days. We are onto something. Everywhere I go I have someone with eyes on me. My cellphone seems to malfunction every time I try to use it and I’m discovering items in my house that have mysteriously shifted. I think people are going through my things. I have attached a signed blank check. I will be out of town for a bit and you can write in whatever amount you think is necessary if you need the funds. I hope your investigation is going well. I will contact you soon when I feel unheeded. Stay safe brother!

JK

As a note I will mention that the blank signed check was entered into our Swynwynne branch vault. I will also note that my future trip to D.C. will be financed by Dr. Edmond and not Mr Kenison.

Kenison File Report: 8

March 23rd, 2019

I am in D.C. where I have met up with Dr. Edmond. Edmond explained that my discovery was so odd because of the rarity of the element. I told him the story behind Detective Kenison and my meeting with Mr Hawkins. I explained that I felt something really odd did happen that day on November 8th, 2018. I asked Dr. Edmond if he would help me on this case I had by answering a few questions. Dr. Edmond told me that he would, but that he wished for me to meet with some people from the Department of Energy first.

March 24th, 2019

I met with several of Dr. Edmond’s colleagues and have one more private appointment tomorrow with another lead scientist. Everyone I spoke with seemed shocked that I could find this substance in the middle of the woods. As I began to tell more of the story about Detective Kenison the fire alarm went off. I was then advised that the meeting would be postponed until later tomorrow.

I have come to the conclusion that ex detective James Kenison is hellbent on pushing me and the others involved in this case through an elaborate hoax to waste the time and money of many of good people. Any further follow up would be a waste of resources. Absolute Investigations will no longer be pursuing claims of Mr Kenison. This case is officially closed.

Holy cow! I was on the edge of my seat the entire read. I have never seen a story presented in this manner, but I love it. What an interesting and fresh take on sci-fi. Reminds me of Kolchak meets the X-Files meets True Detective. I hope this isn't a one-off and we get to see a lot more of this bizarre world through the eyes (reports) of Kenison. Bravo!
