DISTURBED JANE.

the-framed-photo

When Jane woke up, she couldn't even tell that she was in the hospital. Her head was heavy, she couldn't get up. All she could see were white sheets that hang around when she was. She was a bit hungry, well very hungry for she found it hard to even lift her hand. She wanted to talk but she couldn't. She was tired.

Luckily a nurse walked into the room where she was situated . Noticed that she was awake and appeared weak. Too weak. Placed her head on a pillow. And Jane could not quit figure out where she was. She wanted to ask the nurse but her lips wouldn't move. And the nurse picked up a glass of water that was on a small table and helped her drink it up.

And she felt the water land heavily on her empty stomach. And she could now roll her eyes sighting round the room.
.
The nurse rolled up the white sheets and Jane could see more beds with people on them. But still couldn't tell what was happening. Still frail, her hands wouldn't move no matter how hard she tried. Then the nurse walked out. Without saying a word to her...
After about an half an hour the nurse come back with a tray, a plate of rice and chicken soup resting on it. Placed it on the table on the side if Jane's bed and looked at Jane with a worried face. Jane wanted to grab the plate, but her strength failed her. ..

The nurse noticed that and sat on her bed. Helped her up and started feeding her until she had finished the whole lot...
And helped her to a glass of water after she was done.
Almost immediately she could feel her body. She was not struggling to roll her eyes, her hands and legs could move . But she still couldn't talk.
...
She figured out that she was in the hospital, but how she got there she just couldn't remember. She checked her whole body to check if she was hurt , and her body was okay. Nothing was broken..
.. .
. She tried to remember what might have happened, tried to remember her name but she remembered nothing . Not even her own name. The nurse gave her an injection before she left her to herself....
...
Without a voice, without a memory Jane tucked herself back to bed because everyone else in the room was already asleep. ..
She didn't sleep that night. All she kept seeing was a empty room with big frames on it. Big pictures in a room.
. .
When it was morning, the whole room was noisy. Nurses attending to the patients.
" Oh well, look whose up late," the nurse from earlier said as she pulled up the white sheets.
.. Jane wanted to talk bout her mouth let her down. There's alot she wanted to ask but just couldn't.
.." You don't talk much. " The nurse said realising that Jane hadn't said a word after almost a minute. "I guess I'll just bring you breakfast then. I hope you have your appetite. " she said walking out looking rather dissapointed .
. . Jane got out of bed and walked into the ladies room. It was in there that she noticed the bandages on her head. She almost shouted, but all she did was shriek a bit. I bet she even didn't hear her own shriek.
......
.. When she come back the nurse was already done making her bed.
" You look worried. What is wrong? "the nurse asked.
Jane not able to speak just pointed at the bandages on her head.
"Oh.. That. Well, when they brought you here two weeks ago, you were pretty hurt. So we had to patch you up a little bit. Truthfully, we didn't think you were gonna make it. " the nurse said.
.....
Jane didn't touch her breakfast that day. Not even her lunch. She had to be forced to take her meal at night. ...
...
The following few days she tried hard to figure out who she was but to no avail. Her memory was jagged up, and all she could remember was the room with the massive photo frames.. On the fourth day her voice came back to her.
......
"I need to know, who am I? And what am I doing here? " She asked her nurse who was bringing her breakfast..

" Well, you decided to talk. " the nurse joked. " I don't know who you are. You are in hospital. And I was asked to look after you soon after you woke from your comma. Some friend of yours has been visiting ,maybe she'll answer you when she gets here. We'll call her and tell her you woke up."
...
She didn't touch her breakfast, again.
...
She was confused. Worried if I may add. Disturbed. Lost in an empty head that wouldn't help her remember who she was....
...
She wasn't sure who her friend was, so she sat up on her bed, holding on to the bandages on her head, trying to force up some memories .. Nothing came up. Just frames with blurry pictures...
...
" Jane. Thank God you are awake. I was worried sick about you, " her visitor said.

She didn't know her, couldn't remember her.She faked a smile as her visitor squeezed her,:hugging her.

They had a long conversation. Jane trying to know who she really was.
" am glad you are okay. I'll go home, clean up your room and come pick you up tomorrow. " Janet said.
.. Jane , Janet and Joyce were triplets. Not look alikes but sisters. Jane and Janet have been together since their parents passed on. Joyce passed away a few years ago in a car accident. Jane was there too but she survived and has since then been blaming herself for her sister's death.
....
. When they got home, the following day, the first thing Jane saw were the frames on the hall way. A big photo hang up on one side, two others near the door. What caught her sight was the biggest frame.
.. Three girls, all in their graduation kits.
"Who is in the middle? " she asked.
" That's Joyce. Our sister. She came out first before us. "Janet replied...
.....
And Jane went close to the frame, ran her hand over Joyce's face, closed her eyes as if something was coming back to her.. ..
... And smiled...
...

" Why was I really in the hospital. I think you lied to me. Tell me what happened to me. "
She enquired.
Janet couldn't bring herself to tell her that she tried to kill herself by jumping off the roof. She was scared that Jane would try to kill herself again as she had tried many times before.

" You slipped down the stairs and knocked you head real hard against the concrete. " she lied .again. back at the hospital she'd told her that she had been battered by thieves.
.....
Jane could tell that she was lying. But didn't press her to talk anymore. .
Janet walked her to her room, some few doors away from the massive frames.

... . On the right side of her bed, a small frame held a smaller picture of the whole family . She could see Joyce's smile was the brightest. And she held the photo tightly near her breasts. She ran her fingers on the photos in her room. And with every single touch she seemed to be getting something from her head. All this time Janet was watching from the door. And it worried her that she even started crying....
...
.Jane heard her sobbing.
" Why are you crying? " she asked.
" I still can't believe you are home. I thought I really lost you this time. " she replied.
" Wait. What do you mean by 'this time'?" she asked...
. Janet decided to come clean and tell her the truth.
" This photo you keep on touching is the last photo we took with Joyce after our graduation . That night we decided to celebrate. I was home setting up the party while you guys went to grab out stuff. Mom and dad were driving you when you got run over by a track. They didn't survive. You are the only who survived. " She narrated. " Ever since they died, you've been broken. Hard on yourself. You've tried killing yourself like a dozen times. This last time was different. You jumped off the roof. But somehow you still survived. ".. .
... Jane didn't say a word..
. She held her hands onto her head, closed her eyes and started crying. Both of them cried, without saying nothing to each other. They didn't eat that night.
They all went to bed, having not said a word to each other. .
Janet hid all the knives and sharp objects in the house before she went to bed. She still wasn't convinced that Jane wouldn't try to take her life again. She was scared and terrified of loosing the only family she had left...
.... None of them slept. ...
Jane sneaked out of her room out to the hall way, sat on the floor staring at Joyce's smile. The whole night. When it was morning she carried the whole frame to her room, placed it right where she could see it while in bed...
... .
She ran her hands on her mother's face, and her heart skipped...
... She rose to have a clear view. And for a while she couldn't move.

All she could do was burst in tears...
......
