Murder by the Written Word IV
Dale dropped his gaze and stood looking at the floor for a moment. Then with a heavy sigh he grabbed her arm once again trying to move her to the parlor. But Tiffany pulled away and drew herself up to her full five feet tall frame and marched in before him; surveying the room before staring in disbelief.
“What the hell? Did somebody whack a dog?” She asked incredibly.
Dale shook his head and followed her. In the corner of the room lay what appeared to be a large long haired dog with blood running out from under the fur. On further inspection, Tiffany discovered that it was a large fur coat covering something that was laying on the floor with blood around it.
"No, it's not Albert Andrews. It is his nephew, Martin Andrews. The elder Andrews is upstairs with the doctor. It seemed Martin felt his uncle’s longevity should climax and he came to hurry the process. Martin decided he couldn’t wait anymore for his part of the estate. Mr. Andrews was in his wheel chair and heard a great commotion in the attic. He used the elevator to come down to the first floor to alert his wife. We still don't know what Martin may have been looking for in that attic. We do know that he had a 9mm Smith and Wesson but fortunately, Mr. Andrews carries a nice little Bodyguard 38 under his blankets at all times. A confrontation ensued and as a result; Matthew was fatally shot. It was Mrs. Andrews who called us." Dale shrugged his arms as if that was the whole story and Tiffany should be glad for the information and leave.
"Ok then why were you out in the cemetery with a gun when I came over the wall? Tell me what you were looking for out there, Colombo?"
Suddenly Dale's belt hummed and a voice that sounded familiar to Tiffany came on. The sound of Montgomery’s voice caused Tiffany’s thoughts to shift from second to fifth gear. Dale took his cell phone off speaker and walked to the furthest side on the room for privacy. Tiffany waited with her arms crossed and her foot tapping.
After his conversation, Dale moved towards Tiffany. He could not help but notice the frustrated look on her face.
“Why the subterfuge, Dale? You led me to believe that you didn’t know Montgomery,” She accused.
Not waiting for any explanation, Tiffany whirled to the door and scurried down the marble stairs. Once in the car, her hands were trembling as she fumbled with the keys. It didn’t take long for Dale to reach her.
“I don’t have to give you an explanation regarding everybody I know. Montgomery plays in a league that would be better for you to avoid.” Dale admonished.
“I think it may be too late for that, Dale.” Tiffany replied beginning to relax a little.
“And what do you mean by that Tiffany?” Dale’s handsome features grimaced. “Out with it Tiffany, I know you’re up to something.”
Tiffany felt that she may as well tell Dale since he would be informed by the police that she called earlier.
“OK, after you left I was approached by a strange character.” Tiffany began.
“What do you mean, a strange character?” Dale asked.
“Well, for one thing—he was dressed like for Halloween.” Tiffany replied.
“He was dressed for Halloween, make sense Tiffany.” Dale retorted beginning to feel agitated.
“Yes, he had some type of mask on his face and he told me that I had better steer clear of the Andrews Estate or some evil may befall me.” Tiffany said remembering that night vividly, being careful not to mention her little mishap.
“What kind of evil did he say would befall you?” Dale asked a look of concern was on his face. This produced an inward smile from Tiffany.
“He didn’t say. Then after I got home I was awaken by the telephone. His voice was muffled but I think it was the same person.” Tiffany replied again remembering the events of earlier.
“How did he get your telephone number?” Dale asked by this time he was really worried.
“How should I know?” Now Tiffany was somewhat irritated. “He just said that I knew who he was and that was unfortunate for me and that he not only knew who I am but he knew where I live. He said to stay away from the estate.”
“I’ve been trying to tell you that all along. There is more to this than meets the eye, honey. I know you want to make a reputation for yourself in literary circles but—wait a minute; do you know who this joker is?” Dale quizzed looking at Tiffany with one eyebrow raised.
“I have my ideas.” Tiffany answered with a smirk expression on her face. “Now if you excuse me Mr. Carter, I do have work to do.”
Dale backed away from the Lexus and Tiffany spun wheels heading out of the driveway. Dale shook his head and put both hands into his pockets. He couldn’t leave the estate until the coroner and the forensic team arrived. However, he thought aloud ...
“This conversation isn’t over, my darling—no it’s just begun.”
