Leaving Signatures in the Sand

Updated on August 11, 2017

I'm a writer, a poet, a dreamer. Born and raised in New York City. I live in the suburbs of Riga, Latvia. I have a wonderful cat named Sid.

Our bodies leave imprints in the sand,

still warm from the sun,

as a remembrance to the sea,

that this is where we lay that day,

until the waves wash -

these signatures away.

Somewhere dancing upon the waves,

magical mermaids from underwater kingdoms,

will receive our signatures,

like greetings

and will place them in seashells -

so others can hear our voices.

It’s truly funny to imagine,

that our signatures can travel,

perhaps to foreign shores,

upon the waves that took them

and weave them with others -

that they find along the way.

Like a special remembrance,

that we were once a part of life’s scheme,

we were here to love, to live and to dream,

leaving behind sparkling memories -

as we pass our signatures along.

Beneath the shimmering sun,

as the sea sparkles,

along the shore,

our footprints will wash away –

just like our signatures in the sand.

Only the mermaids,

that sit upon rocks in the sun,

know the secrets that the sea holds,

know the sounds of many different voices,

that leave their signatures -

embedded in the sand.

Wonderful poem bringing back memories of long walks and sitting on the beach. I like the idea of footprints and signatures being preserved and shared.

This is delightful to read. Already the cause of my daydreaming. What a good thought you have given.

How enchanting! Great idea that our signatures can travel around the world. I live near a beach and there are many signatures of people, birds, worms, shells, stones and much more.

      You've fired my imagination, Rasma!

We all do this, don't we...leave signatures on the beaches of our lives? Beautiful poem, Rasma! Happy Friday to you!

Your words made me feel as if I was flowing with the tide. Sort of a lulling feel. Lovely, as was the picture.
