Here's to Us

BeckyTP formally known as Rebecca Moraa is a student at Moi University Main Campus Kenya. My passion in poetry grew in primary school.

Here's to us, that never had to live in "normal families." For those of us who never had a dad that left work in the evening to bring home candies and chocolate bars.

Here's to us, who rarely saw 'our mothers, simply because they were so busy, trying to put food on our floor ; we never could fit a table.

Here's to us who had our homework done at corner stalls with no adult's supervision simply because our mothers were busy hustling while the fathers sat to evening stories.

Here's to us who perched on neighbours window sills to watch television since we could not afford our own.

Here's to us whose mothers overworked in tatters to bring food to our house which could barely go round our crowded home.

Here's to us who attended parties in the neighbourhood with bowls in hand ; so we could bring home some food.

Here's to us, who never had tall relatives that cared about us. They would never blink an eye in our direction ; it hurt.

Here's to us, who had no choice but to work and sweat for everything we ever desired. Nothing ever came easy on our way.

Here's to us, who got all kinds of ugly scars on the route to making our lives better.

If you meet me one of these fine days, we shall smile and say it, "Yes, we made it."

If you ask me how the going has been, I will look deep into yours and proudly say, "Finally ; we're here."
