Friendship at First and Last Sight: A Poem

Val is a life-long student of the psycho-philosophy of living and a devoted practitioner of many techniques that enhance personal evolution.

One day I saw a stranger who could be my friend

in one of those weird moments surreal or what

my fancy going busy with good times we might spend

somewhat confused but O.K. with that feeling in my gut.

Then our eyes met by accident, not in a stare

and in that brief moment we told our story

something like in a duet of the same song to share

with no heroics, epics, or life success glory.

There are these crazy times when telepathy looks real

with us somehow knowing what someone will next do

as if tuned into what they may think and feel

and that's what was happening to me out of blue.

A little tic on his face that could have been a smile

made me self-conscious as if I had said too much

with him just listening attentively all the while

and those thinking eyes staying close in touch.

And then the bus stopped. Just before he disappeared

he gave me a quick friendly look with which my story ends

leaving me with feelings no matter how true or weird

how I just got more going with a stranger than with some past friends.

I have met people on the bus and was able to talk with them better than people I have known all my life. It seems as if the more you get to know someone the better the vibe should be but that's not always the case.
