Camille couldn't believe Fabian asked her out.
They'd been friends since their freshman year of college and now they're seniors. Camille's been pining for him since last semester and she thought nothing would happen.
Except, it did.
Fabian had been acting strange and Camille could never figure out why. Finally, he knocked on her apartment door at 9 at night and confessed. He'd told her how he liked her and he'd been working up the courage to ask her on a date.
He had been shocked when Camille said yes, and they planned to go on a date that upcoming Friday.
Today is Friday.
Camille is nervous and she's changed outfits two times already. She went from wearing a simple, black dress to a red blouse with a black pencil skirt. She was a mess.
"It'll be fine," Ariana, Camille's best friend, assures her. "Don't stress over it."
"But, what if it's not?" Camille responds, pulling at her braids. She'd gotten them done yesterday, and they were dark red. "What if it's terrible and it ruins our friendship?"
"Camille," Ariana says, with a roll of her eyes, "I know, just like you do, that Fabian isn't like that."
"Yeah, you're right," she mumbles, and takes one more look at herself. "How do I look?"
"You look good girl," Ariana says, "he's going to be blown away."
Camille smiles softly and talks more with Ariana to calm her nerves. Soon, there's a knock on her door and Camille shoots up from the couch. Ariana gives her a thumbs up and walks into the kitchen, leaving her to open the door.
"Wow," Fabian says, once she'd open the door to let him in. "You look amazing."
"Thank you," Camille blushes, "you look great too."
"Thanks," his face flushes. "Are you ready to go?"
"Yes," she says, quickly. "Bye Ari."
"Bye Cam," she yells back, "I'll lock up before leaving."
Camille tells her okay and then walks out. Fabian opens the car door and she smiles while getting in.
He's being a gentleman.
"You didn't speak to Ari," she says, when he gets in and starts the car.
"I didn't?" he asks, backing out of her driveway. "I'm kind of nervous, so I must've forgot."
"I'm nervous too," she replies.
"We shouldn't be though right?" Fabian asks, his eyes on the road. "We've been friends for so long."
"You're right," Camille agrees, and lets out a nervous breath.
The air is less tense now and both Camille and Fabian feel themselves relaxing, and soon they were at the restaurant. It was a new restaurant called The Flaming Steak and Camille had been wanting to come to check it out. She fidgets with excitement while she waits for Fabian to open her door.
"This was a good choice?" Fabian asks, bemusedly. He'd noticed her excitement.
"Yes!" Camille exclaims, "you know I've been wanting to come here since it opened!"
Fabian chuckles as he escorts her to the door, and holds it open. Once they're in, they check out the inside. It was a family-owned business and it had a calming tone to it.
"Welcome to Flaming Steak," a waitress says, as she walks over to them with a smile on her face. "Table or booth?"
"Booth," they both say at the same time.
They're escorted over and they sit down with their menus in hand. Camille orders a raspberry-lemonade and Fabian orders a sprite.
When the waitress leaves, there's a moment of silence before Camille breaks it.
"I'm really happy you asked me out," she says, quietly.
"I am too," he replies, "I've wanted this for awhile."
"Well, now we're here," Camille says, a rush of courage flowing through her. She reaches across the table to grab Fabian's hand. "There's no one I'd rather be here with."
Fabian smiles at that and he strokes a thumb across her hand.
"I can tell this is going to be the best first date I've ever been on." he says.
"And your last," Camille says, confidently... And she's right.
