Don't Hold Your Breath

Updated on April 9, 2017

Eyes closed,

I take in a lungful of crisp air

and hold it there.

Foolishly I thought that perhaps,

trapping the breath inside would keep it with me always,

and never would I need to take another.

Foolishly I thought that it would sustain me forever.

But it burned.

It clawed at my chest, attempting to break free.

It ached as if I was killing it,

a wild animal that could take no comfort in captivity.

And in that moment I realized,

that my gripping such a life-giving entity so tightly

would only break it, and suffocate me in the process.

Upon it’s release,

I once again sucked in air.

And let it go,

so in complete continuity

My breath can flow.

Awesome. What a perfect way to say live and let live. Enjoyed.

A most metaphorical piece and I trust that you intended this, for then its brilliant; pure genius in fact!

I felt myself holding my breath tightly as I read your poem. Great imagery:)
