A Church Atop the Island.....

Just off the land and out to sea,

Separated yet conjoined by the ocean and the moon,

With her waxing and waning of the tides

Here lies le Mont Saint-Michel, swoon

The story goes,

An 8th century Bishop

by the name of Aubert,

Lived on the nearby hilltop of Avranches position

He was pushed by Archangel Michael,

To build the church atop the island,

Just out to sea,

Who could it be? Le Mont Saint Michael elon.

At the rise of the mountaintop,

Dawns the Benedictine Abbey,

One of the greatest learning centres

In the 12 Century carry

A magnetic place, for the greatest minds

and manuscript Illuminators,

From all over Europe

To grace this medieval pollinator

But time and wars became commonplace,

Sieges took place by William the Conqueror

and the Duke of Normandy,

Just like sorcerers

Now beautifully restored,

Winding streets, houses, restaurants

And friends once known,

Still reminding us of the light of the Renaissance

Where scribes recorded history in colour and print

With beauty falling of the pages,

Filling up one’s mind

With hope and valour contagion
