What to Say in a Thinking of You Card
What to Write?
Thinking of You cards are often used when other types of greetings cards do not quite fit the occasion. We have Sympathy cards for when someone experiences a death of a loved one, and Get Well cards for illnesses or surgeries. There are times, however, when a person just needs to know that you care and are thinking of them.
Though many Thinking of You cards are used to acknowledge a sad or unpleasant circumstance such as divorce or job loss, they also can be used for happier times. You may want to send a friend one of these cards just to let them know why they are special.
You can even send Thinking of You cards by email or by posting on Facebook. Hallmark charges $1 per month for unlimited access to their online greeting cards, and American Greetings offers a free trial for their service.
Types of Thinking of You Cards
When you shop for greeting cards, there usually is a small section for Thinking of You cards. Many will contain a poem or sentiment that you like. If so, you can add a short personal line under the message or leave a longer note on the left inside page of the card.
You may consider choosing a blank card or note, which can be purchased individually or as a boxed set. Similar to how you would write a thank you note, start your message with a greeting such as "Dear" and finish with an appropriate closing, for example, "Love, Mary" or "Take care, Bob." At the end of this article are samples of what to write for different scenarios.
When to Send One
In most cases, you will send a Thinking of You card to someone to give encouragement in a difficult situation or to just say you care. It is not a time to ramble on about your own problems in an attempt to make a connection.
It is fine to mention briefly how you relate to the problem, but your friend does not need to hear your whole story. For example, if you send a note to a woman who just had a miscarriage, it would be helpful to mention that you are familiar with the heartache (if you have experienced this, too). It is not appropriate for you to go on and on about your own experience in a note.
When you send this type of card, focus on the recipient and what words will soothe and encourage him. These are some times when a Thinking of You card would be called for:
- Relationship problems - Whether it is a divorce or other type of break-up, your friend needs to be cheered up and to know that he is not alone.
- Problem involving a child - Children can be a source of joy, but sometimes a source of pain. Whether someone's child has been ill or in trouble, the parent will be encouraged by your note.
- Financial problems - People do not like to talk about money problems, but if you know someone lost a job or is struggling financially, send them a note saying you are praying for them, or have them in your thoughts. An invitation to dinner may be a nice gesture as well.
- Problems with pregnancy - This is another delicate issue where you want to reach out to the family if there has been a miscarriage or fertility problems.
- Feeling depressed - Your friend may just be feeling low and needs a pick-me-up.
- Special friend - There are times when you just want to reach out to someone to let them know they are special and mean a lot to you. Sending a note for this reason will surely put a smile on her face.
If your greeting card already has a nice pre-printed sentiment, and you only want to add a short personal message, this list of sample lines may help:
- Keep going strong and know I am behind you.
- Know that we love you and are praying for you.
- I'll call you later this week to talk. Hang in there!
- I'll call you later this week to make lunch plans.
- Just take life one day at a time. Things will get better.
- You will make it through this, and I am here to help.
- You are doing an amazing job getting through these hard times. Please let me help you out.
